Create a voluminous text using a mix brush in Photoshop

In this tutorial, you will see how to create and adjust the mix brush options so that when drawing you get text with a 3D effect. Let’s start!

1. How to create background and text layers

Step 1

Create a new document with a size of 1250 x 2000 pixels, then click on the icon Create new fill or adjustment layer (Create a new adjustment or fill layer) At the bottom of the Layers panel, select Solid color (Color) and install Color fill (Fill color) # 040214.

Step 2

Add a background image from the archive on top of the layer. SolidColor (Color), rename its layer to “BG Texture”, reduce Opacity (opacity) to 35% and resize as needed.

Step 3

Create an inscription using any font you like. Here I used the font – “Nickainley”, size – 350 pt.

If you get a few lines, be sure to change the value of “Fri” to the one you need. Here it is set to 550 pt.

2. How to create and customize the mix brush style

Step 1

Choose a tool Ellipse tool (Ellipse) make sure the parameter Shape (Figure) is active on the options bar and then click anywhere in the document to open the window. Create Ellipse (Create an ellipse).

Set the width and height to 50 pixels and click OK.

Double click on the layer Ellipse (Ellipse) to apply the following layer style:

Step 2

Add a Gradient overlay (Overlay gradient) with these settings:

  • Check field Dither (Dithering)
  • Style (Style): Radial (Radial)
  • Angle (Angle): 0
  • Scale (Scale): 150%
  • If necessary, check the box Reverse (Inversion).
  • Click on the gradient to create it. Use colors # 35378e on the left, # b62789 in the center and # f15332 on the right.

You can use any colors you like to create a gradient to get different results.

Step 3

We need to move the gradient to the top of the ellipse. To do this, drag the gradient fill inside the ellipse, without closing the “layer style” panel.

Step 4

Add style BevelandEmboss (Emboss) with these settings:

  • Size (Size): 25
  • Uncheck Use Global Light (Global coverage)
  • Angle (Angle): 158
  • Altitude (Height): 32
  • Gloss Contour (Gloss contour): Cove – Deep (Deep groove)
  • Tick on Antialiased (Smoothing)
  • Highlight mode (Backlight mode): Vivid light (Bright light)
  • Opacity (Opacity): 65%
  • ShadowMode (Shadow mode): ColorBurn (Blackout basics)
  • Color (Color): # 7a7a7a
  • Opacity (Opacity): 25%

Step 5

Add style Contour (Contour) with these settings:

  • Contour (Circuit): Cone – Inverted (Inverted cone)
  • Tick on Antialiased (Smoothing).
  • Range (Range): 100%

So we created the desired style, which we will later use for the tool Mixer Brush Tool (Mix brush).

Now we need to rasterize the layer with our style to use it with the tool Mixer Brush Tool (Mix brush). You can first duplicate the layer to save a copy, hide it, and then, right-click on the copy, select RasterizeLayerStyle (Rasterize the layer style).

3. Create a text outline

Step 1

Choose a tool Pen tool (Pen) then select Path (Contour) on the panel Options (Options).

Click on the text to add anchor points, and then drag them to create curves. It is necessary to make a contour stroke, but not on the edge, but inside the shape of the letter.

Step 2

When creating a path, you can hold down the Command / Alt key at any time to adjust the control points and their directions.

Another way to do this is to use the tool. DirectSelectionTool (Highlight node) (A).

Step 3

On the panel Path (Contour) double click on the tab Work path (Work path), enter a name and save your path.

Step 4

It is better to make a separate outline for each letter, so that later it is easier to add a stroke.

Make sure you align the contour so that it smoothly matches each other on different letters.

4. Customize Mix-Brush

Step 1

Choose a tool Mixer Brush Tool (Mix brush) (click and hold the standard tool BrushTool (Brush) to open the mini toolbar). Set these settings in the options bar:

  • Click on the icon Loadthebrushaftereachstroke (Fill the brush after each stroke).
  • Click on the icon Clean the brush after each stroke (Clean brush after each stroke).
  • Select Dry, Heavy Load (Dry, a lot of paint) from the list Useful mixer brush combinations (Useful mix brush combinations).
  • Wet (Humidity): 0%
  • Load (Filling): 100%
  • Flow (Push): 100%
  • Stroke smoothing (Smoothing strokes): 100%
  • Uncheck Sample all layers (Samples of all layers).

After you set up the mix brush, increase the size of the brush 10 pixels larger than the size of the ellipse. Here the brush size is set to 60 pixels.

Step 2

Select a layer with an ellipse, place the cursor in its center, press and hold the Option / Alt key and then left-click to load the ellipse.

5. How to draw a path using the mix brush tool

Step 1

Hide the text layer and create a new layer on top of it.

Step 2

Choose a tool Path selection tool (Outline selection), select the desired outline, then right-click and select the outline of the outline in the context menu. In the settings, select the mix brush.

Step 3

Press the Return / Enter key to circle the outline, then create a new layer, select the next outline of the letter and also create a outline of the outline.

Step 4

Continue to select the outline and circle it on separate layers until you circle the first word.

For convenience, put all layers in a group.

Step 5

Next, create a contour stroke on other words.

6. How to get rid of unwanted ends in strokes

Step 1

On some letters, you can see the end of the stroke where it is not needed, for example, on the letter “O”.

To fix this, you need to change the starting and ending points of the contour, either by recreating the contour or turning it upside down.

To flip the contour, use the tool Path selection tool (Outline selection). Select a path and press the key combination Command + T / Ctrl + T to switch to the free transform mode.

Right-click on the transformation frame and select Flip horizontal (Flip horizontally) and then select Flip vertical (Flip Vertically).

Press Return / Enter to commit changes.

Step 2

Create a new layer on top of the original layer with the outline and create a stroke again.

Step 3

Then select the tool EraserTool (Eraser) and erase the tip of the stroke.

For convenience, you can temporarily hide all layers on top of the one you are working on.

If the reflection method does not create the desired result, you can recreate the original contour, but with different starting and ending points.

Step 4

Repeat this step to correct the rest of the circuit.

7. How to change the direction of the contour

Step 1

If you want to completely change the direction of the contour, select the tool Pen tool (Pen) and click on the starting point of the contour.

Step 2

Then click on the end point of the contour to merge the contour.

Step 3

Choose a tool Direct selection tool (Selecting a node), click outside the contour to deselect it, then click on the segment you created to close the source contour (between the start and end points).

Press the button Delete (Delete) to get rid of the selected segment. Thus, we changed the direction of the contour.

Step 4

Now use the tool Path selection tool (Outline selection) to select an inverted outline, and again create a stroke on a new layer.

8. How to smooth contour stroke

Step 1

Select all groups with text, duplicate them, press the key combination Command-E / Ctrl + E to merge copies into one layer. The original can be hidden.

Step 2

Go to Filter > Stylize > Diffuse (Filter> Stylize> Diffusion) and set the mode Anisotropic (Anisotropic) for a smoother result.

Step 3

Add any additional contour points or accents manually, if necessary, and do not forget to do it on new layers so that you can convert them if you want, and then apply a diffuse filter to each layer separately.

Congratulations! That’s all!

In this tutorial, we created a simple text layer and background. Then we created an ellipse, set up its layer style and used it to work with the mix brush. After that we created an outline for the text and made a stroke. Finally, we used a filter to smooth the final result.
