Beautiful wide fonts are a timeless trend in design. And in this tutorial, you will learn how to create an elegant floral text effect with roses. Let’s start!
I was inspired to create this effect by the various layer styles that are available on the GraphicRiver website.
1. Create a quick selection.
It is very important to choose the right pictures to create the effect. For this lesson we need a photo with a large number of colors, it is desirable that between them there is empty space and good contrast with the background.
Open the picture with roses, take Quick Selection Tool (W) (Quick selection) and press the button on the top panel Add to selection (Add to selected area).
After that we carry out the tool on roses to select them. If you accidentally select an extra part, then hold down the Alt key and delete the selection with the same tool.
When finished with highlighting, click Select and Mask (Highlight and Mask) on the top bar.
Note translator: this button appeared in Photoshop CC 2015.5. In older versions, there is a button in its place. Refine Edge (Refine Edge), which you can use in this lesson if you do not have the correct version of the program.
Install View (View) on On Black (On black) and increase Opacity (Opacity) up to 100%.
Adjust the remaining parameters to get a neat and smooth selection.
In this case Smooth (Smooth) is set to 5, Shift Edge (Shift edge) – by -30%. Thanks to this we will get a smooth selection and eliminate the selection of extra details outside of the colors.
You can also activate the parameter Decontaminate Colors (Clear colors) to reduce the number of colors, and set Output (Conclusion) on New Layer with Layer Mask (New layer with mask).
Due to this, a new layer will appear with the mask applied according to the shape of the selection. If necessary, you can adjust the mask and improve the result.
Duplicate (Ctrl + J) the resulting layer, right-click on the mask and select Apply Layer Mask (Apply a layer mask).
Name the resulting layer “Roses”, save the file in PSD format and do not close it, as we will use this file for the entire lesson.
2. Create a background and add text.
Create a new document with a size of 1150 x 850 pixels, click on the button Create new fill or adjustment layer (Create a new fill or adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers panel and select Gradient (Gradient).
Create a gradient fill using the colors #ffffff (left) and # d3d3d3 (right).
Install Style (Style) on Radial (Radial) and Scale (Scale) – at 255.
We write the text using the font Lust Script. Install Size (Size) at 350 pt and color – at # 160742.
3. Add colors and adjustment layers.
Place the “Roses” layer above the text layer, click on it with the right mouse button and select Convert to Smart Object (Convert to smart object), then right-click again and select Create Clipping Mask (Create clipping mask).
The use of smart objects allows you to apply effects, such as filters or color correction, without disturbing the structure of the layer itself and with the ability to adjust the effect parameters at any time. However, in older versions of Photoshop, not everything can be applied to a smart object. But in this case, you can rasterize the layer or use adjustment layers that are added independently of the layer to which they are applied.
Move on Image – Adjustments – Selective Color (Image – Correction – Selective color correction) and use the following settings:
- Cyan (Blue): -10
- Magenta (Purple): 5
- Yellow (Yellow): 10
- Black (Black): 30
- Cyan (Blue): 35
- Magenta (Magenta): -30
- Black (Black): -10
- Cyan (Blue): 35
- Magenta (Purple): 5
- Yellow (Yellow): -50
- Black (Black): 15
With the help of this adjustment layer, we produced a general color correction of the image and enhanced the blue color in dark places.
You can experiment with the settings to get a different result. Also, do not forget that the values will vary depending on the stock photos you use.
Next, go Image – Adjustments – Levels (Image – Correction – Levels) and apply the following settings:
- Input Shadows (Shadows): 20
- Gamma (Mid Tones): 0.85
- Output highlights (Light): 235
- Output Shadows (Shadows): 20
The adjustment layer will darken the image slightly and add more blue.
Move on Filter – Noise – Reduce Noise (Filter – Noise – Reduce noise) and apply the following settings:
- Strength (Intensity): 7
- Preserve Details (Save details): 55
- Reduce Color Noise (Reduce color noise): 45
- Sharpen details (Sharpen details): 15
This is an optional step, but with this filter we added a slight plastic effect on the roses.
Move on Image – Adjustments – Hue/Saturation (Image – Correction – Hue / Saturation) and set Saturation (Saturation) at -5.
Move on Filter – Camera Raw (Filter – Camera Raw). Tab Basic (Basic) install Clarity (Clarity) at 50.
4. Customize the color of different images
Open the photo Rose 01 and cut out the background with a mask, as we did with the first shot.
Apply mask to get rasterized layer.
To add this rose to the working paper, we need to adjust its color. This can be done in many ways, but the fastest is to use Match Colors (Pick color).
Move on Image – Adjustments – Match Colors (Image – Correction – Match colors).
Drop down to Image Statistics (Image statistics) and parameter Source (Source) set on a PSD document with original carved roses, Layer (Layer) set to “Roses”.
It is in such situations that it is more convenient to use rasterized layers with applied masks, since the use of original images and masks can distort colors.
By selecting the source file and layer, we can adjust the parameters Image Options (Image Settings) and click OK.
5. How to copy a smart filter
Add a new rose to the working paper, call it “Rose 1” and convert it into a smart object.
Open the filter list of the “Roses” layer. Then we hold down the Alt key and drag the smart filters onto the “Rose 1” layer.
The effect of the Camera Raw filter on this image looks superfluous, so on the layers panel we grab it with the left mouse button and drag it onto the trash can icon at the bottom of the layers panel to remove.
Do not forget that you can remove or change any smart filter.
In the same way we add pictures Rose 02 and Rose 03.
You can also copy a single rose and adjust it so that it does not look like the original. Because of this, you do not have to use tons of different stock images.
6. Add the effect of diving in depth
Add a few small flowers that are further blurred so that they look out of focus.
To do this, select the desired layer and go Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur (Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur), set Radius (Radius) by 3.
We can also add slightly larger roses with a little blur to create a more dynamic effect.
When finished, above all layers add an adjustment layer. Gradient Map (Gradient map).
Use colors # 5d4e7c (left), # 8d6385 (center) and # cd9a90 (right).
Then activate Dither (Dithering) and set the blending mode of the gradient layer to Soft Light (Soft light).
Congratulations, we are done!
In this lesson we cut out flowers, applied color correction and filters to them. Then they added text with flowers, and got an elegant floral text effect.
Feel free to leave comments, suggestions and share the result.
