Create an epic text in Photoshop

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create epic text in Photoshop. This effect is inspired by the video game “Middle-earth: Shadows of Mordor”.

This lesson relates to beginner and intermediate level of difficulty.

Note: This lesson is done in Photoshop CS6 – so some screenshots may differ slightly from previous versions of the program. Some brushes are only available in this version of Photoshop CS6.

OK. Let’s get started!

The final result:

Step 1

Create a new document with the following sizes: 1440 px * 780 px, the background is white. Load the original ‘Mountain’ image in Photoshop, and then select the next part of the image:

Copy / paste the selected part of the image of the mountains on our working paper. Decrease Opacity (opacity) layer, approximately, up to 60%.

Add the following adjustment layers to the selected part of the mountain image:

Black-white (black and white)

Levels (Levels)

Curves (Curves)

The result of the current lesson:

Step 2

Next, let’s select another part of the image, this time, let’s select the movement of the clouds. Go back to the original image with the mountains and select the clouds, as shown in the screenshot below:

Copy / paste the selected part with clouds to our working paper, using a soft eraser, create a smooth transition to the edges of the image with clouds. Next, using Deformations (warp) tool Free transformation (free transform tool), distort the clouds, as shown in the screenshot below:

My result of the obtained effect after deformation:

Download the Fire Texture in Photoshop. Using tool Lasso (Lasso Tool) feathering 40 px (40 px feather), select the following texture area:

Copy / paste the selected part of the fire texture onto our working paper. Place the selected part with the image of fire on the right side of the mountain, and then change the blending mode for this layer to Soft light (Soft Light):

Using a soft eraser, process the edges of the image with fire to create a smooth transition. Next, apply the tool Free transformation (free transform tool) so that the image of the fire matches the shape of the mountain:

Repeat the process of adding a fire texture. Only this time, add a fire texture to the left side of the mountain:

Step 3

Download the font from the link at the beginning of this lesson. Type the following text:

For the text layer, apply the following layer styles:

Step 4

Next, we will add a metallic texture to our text. Download the metal texture in Photoshop. Select the following section of the texture:

Copy / paste the selected portion of the metal texture onto our working paper. Place the metal texture layer over the text layer. Right-click on the metal texture layer and in the appeared window select the option Create clipping mask (Create Clipping Mask):

The result of the current lesson:

Step 5

Next, we will add a spark of fire around the text. Let’s go back to the original image with the fire texture and select the following texture section:

Copy / paste the selected part of the texture with sparks of fire into our working paper. Change the blending mode for the spark layer to Lightening basics (Color Dodge):

Repeat the process of adding sparks of fire, add more fiery sparks to our scene:

Step 6

In this step, we will add a fire effect to the text. Select a part of the fire texture, as shown in the screenshot below:

Copy / paste the selected part of the fire texture onto our working paper. Change the blending mode for this layer with the fire texture to Lightening (Screen):

The result.

Repeat the process of adding a fire texture, add another fire effect to the text:

Step 7

We have almost completed the lesson! As final touches, we can flatten and then duplicate the layer with the background, then apply the filter Oil paint (Oil Paint filter (CS6 +)) to duplicate layer:

Layer duplicate layer layer:

Add the following adjustment layers on top of all other layers:

Levels (Levels)

Curves (Curves)

We have completed the lesson! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. See you, have a nice day!
