Create beautiful neon text in Photoshop

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a unique neon effect. We will use layer masks, selections, blending options, the Pen tool, and adjustment layers.

Note: This lesson is of medium difficulty. When creating this tutorial, Photoshop CS6 was used, so the appearance of the palettes may be different if you use earlier versions of the program.

Step 1

Create a new document sized 1400px * 782 pixels (Ctrl + N) with black background. Open the image of a brick texture and tool Rectangular Selection (Rectangular Marquee tool) draw a selection:

Copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) selected part of the texture in our document and adjust its size to the size of the document (Ctrl + T). Lightly blur the brick texture layer. Filter Gaussian Blur (Gaussian Blur):

Reduce the opacity of the texture layer to 60%.

To a layer with a brick texture, add a layer mask and a black brush on the mask, hide some parts of the texture:

Add a correction layer to the brick texture layer Color balance (color balance) to add some color.


Step 2

Install the font in Photoshop and tool Text (T) write the text. The text color is # c0f4ff.

Apply a style to the text layer. Stamping (Bevel and Emboss):

Also add a layer style. Stroke (Stroke):

Add a layer style Inner shadow (Inner Shadow):

Add a layer style Gloss (Satin):

Color overlay (Color Overlay):

Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay):

External glow (Outer Glow):

Shadow (Drop Shadow):


Step 3

Duplicate the text layer once (Ctrl + J) and move it a little to the side (use the red arrows in the screenshot):

Repeat this process by duplicating the text layer several times and moving it to get this effect:

Apply an adjustment layer to the last duplicate of the text layer. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation). Due to this, the text will become darker.


Step 4

Add light highlights around the text. Select a brush with a size of 6 pixels and a hardness of 90%.

In the color palette, select cyan (# 16f2ff).

Create a new layer. (Shift + Ctrl + N) over all previous layers and set the blending mode for it Overlap (overlay). Now with a brush, paint highlights on the text (use the red arrows in the screenshot):

Add also the effect of smoke (clouds) using a cloud brush or a smoke brush.


Step 5

Tool Pen (Pen Tool) draw a contour – these will be glowing wires:

Select a hard brush of 5 pixels, then go to the tool again. Pen, right-click on the contour and select Outline the contour (StrokePath).

Add a layer style to the lines. Stamping (Bevel and Emboss):


Duplicate the wire layer (Ctrl + J) several times, change the size and shape of each layer with wires and place them around the text:
