In this lesson you will learn how to create long shadows, use the techniques of the cut-off pattern, so that the white text on a white background is not only visible, but readable (provided that the text is large enough).
Start by creating a new document in Photoshop, which is 1600 x 900 pixels, 72 PPI and RGB Color with a white background.
Using the Type tool, create a new text layer with the word White. I use free font Montserrat 340 px. If you do not have this font and you do not want to search and install it, then it is quite possible to use a similar font.
Right-click on the text layer and “Convert to smart object”.
Double-click on the layer with a smart object to bring up a window with layer style settings. Use layer style Color overlay (Color Overlay). Use white color (#FFFFFF).
As a result, our text has become invisible.
To fix this, you need to add lighting and shadow. But first we change the background color, making it a little darker. To do this, use Layer – Fill New Layer – Color (Layer – New fill layer – Color). with color # F7F7F7.
Duplicate the smart object layer, place it in a new group called “Long Shadow” (Long shadow) and move under the original layer.
To layer inside group “Long Shadow” (Long shadow) apply layer style Color overlay (Color Overlay). Color # 000000.
Apply filter to this layer. Motion blur (Motion blur). Install Angle (Angle) 45, Bias (Distance) 20.
For the layer to which we applied the filter Motion blur, reduce opacity to 2% so that it is barely noticeable.
To create a long shadow effect, we need to duplicate and move the blurred layer several times.
It won’t take long if you use hotkeys. First enlarge the image by 50%, then hold down the key Alt, Click the down arrow once to duplicate the layer and move it down. Then press the left arrow key to move the duplicated layer to the left.
Arrow keys are usually offset by 1 pixel. However, if you increase the document to 50%, then it will move the layer by 2 pixels, which is more suitable for our needs.
Repeat the process while holding the key. Alt and pressing the down arrow, then the left arrow another 14 times.
To make the long shadow effect look better, add a lighting effect. Under the group “Long Shadow” (Long shadow) create new layer fill gradient (Layer – New fill layer – Gradient (Layer – New fill layer – Gradient).
Use the default black to white gradient and set Angle by 45 °.
Install opacity (opacity) of the gradient fill layer by 3%. This will create the illusion of an unobtrusive light source.
Finally, we can add subtle highlights to the original text layer using layer styles. Double click on the text layer.
And apply a layer style Shadow (Drop Shadow) with settings:
- Colour (color) #FFFFFF
- Blend mode – normal
- opacity (Opacity): 80
- Angle (Angle): -135 °,
- Bias (Distance): 3 px,
- Swipe (Spread): 0;
- The size (Size) 6px.
The result is hardly noticeable, but if you look carefully, you will see that this gives the effect of light reflected from the edges of the text.
And here is the final result:
By creating a long shadow and using some lighting techniques, we can make the combination of “white on white” colors quite viable for logos, headings and other graphics.
We can also edit the contents of the smart object at any time to change the text, add figures or the logo of our company:
