Create text from dot matrix in Photoshop

In this Photoshop tutorial, I will show you how to create text in the form of a fluid-filled vessel. First we will create a pattern for the liquid, and then add text from the circles as a vessel for filling the liquid. You will learn how to fill the text with liquid, as well as how to create a phosphorescent effect. So let’s get started!

The final result:

Step 1

First we create a pattern for the blue fluid. Create a new document 10 x 10 px, then go View – Show – Grid (View> Show> Grid) to activate the grid, and then go Preview – Snap To – Grid Lines (View> Snap To> Grid) to snap to the grid. Press the keys (Ctrl + K) to bring up the window Installations (Preferences), then select the setting Guides, mesh, etc. (Guides, Grid Slices) and set the settings that are shown in the screenshot below. During the whole lesson, I will turn off the grid visibility (Ctrl + ‘) so that you can see better. The grid will facilitate your work when creating shapes.

Step 2

Set the foreground color to #FFFFFF, and then select the tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool). Approximately draw the following vector shapes, which are shown in the screenshot below.

Once you have drawn the shapes, save the created pattern, to do this, go Editing – Define a pattern (Edit> Define Pattern). Give a name to your pattern, and then press the ‘OK’ button.

Step 3

Press the keys (Ctrl + N) to create a new document with the following dimensions 2000 x 1000 px.

Step 4

Make sure you are on a layer with Background (Background layer). Click on the lock to unlock it.

Set foreground color to # 32313C, select tool Fill (Paint Bucket Tool). Click on the workspace to fill the background with a new color tone.

Right-click on the unlocked layer and in the appeared window select the option Transform at Smart-an object (Convert to Smart Object) and then go Filter – Noise – Add noise (Filter> Noise> Add Noise). Set the settings for this filter, which are shown in the last screenshot below.

Step 5

Choose a tool Horizontal text (Horizontal Type Tool). Install the font Fortuna Dot.

Write the text “AQUA”, the text size is 450 px, the text color is # 2E2D36.

Step 6

To the text layer, apply the layer styles with the settings that are shown in the screenshots below.

For layer style Pattern overlay (Pattern Overlay), use a pattern. HexMetal Mesh from the “Metal Mesh Patterns – Pack 1” pattern set.

Step 7

Change the foreground color to # 226167, select the tool Pen (Pen Tool). Make sure that the mode in the settings of this tool was set to Figure (Shape).

Draw the following vector shape. Try to create an outline along the middle part of the text circles, as if piercing them, as shown in the screenshots below.

Step 8

Hold down the (Ctrl) key and click on the thumbnail of the text layer to load the active selection.

Now, make sure you are on a layer with a drawn blue vector shape. Press the button Add layer mask (Add Layer Mask) at the bottom of the layers panel.

Once you have added a layer mask, press the keys (Ctrl + D) to cancel the active selection.

Step 9

To the layer with the drawn blue vector shape, apply the following styles of the layer with the settings shown in the screenshots below.

For layer style Pattern overlay (Pattern Overlay), use the pattern we created at the beginning of this lesson.

Step 10

Change the foreground color to # 21656C. Choose a tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool).

Concentrate on the circles of the text, which are half covered in blue. Draw small oval-shaped shapes at a height of 6 px, and in width – according to the width of the text circles.

Once you have completed, select all the vector shapes that you drew in this step, right-click on the selected layers and in the appeared window select the option Combine shapes (Merge Shapes).

Step 11

To the layer with the combined shape that you created in the previous step, apply the layer styles with the settings shown in the screenshots below.

Step 12

Set foreground color to # 276A71, make sure tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool) was still active.

Again concentrate on the circles of the text, which are half covered in blue. Draw a lot of small circles (1×1 px – 2×2 px – 3×3 px). Arrange the circles as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 13

Change the foreground color to red (# FF0000). Choose a tool Pen (Pen Tool).

Now create a vector shape that will highlight all the circles of the text, half filled with blue.

Step 14

Create an active selection around the text. Make sure you are on a layer with a red vector shape, then click Add layer mask (Add Layer Mask).

Press the keys (Ctrl + D) to cancel the active selection. Reduce value Fillings (Fill) layer to 0%.

Step 15

For the layer with the red vector shape, apply the layer style with the settings shown in the screenshots below.

Step 16

Change the foreground color to # 2E2D36, select the tool Rounded Rectangle (Rounded Rectangle Tool), in the control panel set Radius (Radius) at 80 px. Draw a vector shape 1760 x 660 px. Arrange it as shown in the screenshot below.

Using the same tool, reduce Radius (Radius) at 75 px, draw another vector shape 1700x 600 px. Place this shape in the center of the rectangle that you drew earlier.

Step 17

Select the layers with vector shapes that you drew in the previous step, then click the right mouse button on one of the layers and in the appeared window select the option Combine shapes (Merge Shapes).

Choose a tool Outline selection (Path Selection Tool), select the vector shape 1700x 600 px, then, in the control panel of this tool, select the mode Subtract front figure (Subtract Front Shape).

Step 18

To the vector shape layer that you created in the previous step, apply the layer styles with the settings shown in the screenshots below.

Step 19

Change the foreground color to # 226167, select the tool Pen (Pen Tool). Draw the following vector shape as shown in the screenshot below.

Hold down the (Ctrl) key and click on the thumbnail of the layer with the merged shape you created in the previous step to load the active selection.

Make sure that the layer with the blue vector shape is active, then click the button Add layer mask (Add Layer Mask).

Step 20

To the vector shape layer that you created in the previous step, apply the layer styles with the settings shown in the screenshots below.

Step 21

Set foreground color to # 21656C, select tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool), draw two vector shapes 30 x 8 px. Arrange them on specified sites.

Once you have completed, select all the vector shapes that you drew in this step, right-click on the selected layers and in the appeared window select the option Combine shapes (Merge Shapes).

Step 22

To the layer with the combined shape that you created in the previous step, apply the layer styles with the settings shown in the screenshots below.

Step 23

Finally, change the foreground color to # 226167, select the tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool), roughly draw a few small circles, as shown in the screenshot below.
