Create text from green slime in Photoshop

This simple tutorial will show you how to use multiple text layers and apply styles to them to create interesting effects. In this lesson we will try to create a fairly realistic effect of Slime using textures and different blending modes.

In this lesson we will have to use non-standard contours that are present in the program, to unlock them, go to Editing – Sets – Set Management (Edit> Presets> Preset Manager) in the window that appears, select Contours (Contours) then click on the small gear and select Contours (Contours) in the dialog box, just click To add (Append).

Step 1

Create a new document. File-Create (File-New) with the following parameters:

  • Width (Width): 850 pixels.
  • Height (Height): 550 pixels.

Place the texture on the created by us document (Ice Texture 4), if necessary, transform it to the size of the document.

Double-click the texture layer with the left mouse button and apply the following styles with the appropriate parameters:

Inner Glow“(Inner Glow)

  • Blend mode (Blend Mode): “Bright light“(Vivid Light)
  • Opacity (Opacity): 35%
  • Colour(Color): (#FFFFFF)
  • A source (Source): “Center” (Center)
  • The size (Size): 250 pixels.

Color Overlay“(Color Overlay)

  • Colour(Color): (# bfeb8c)
  • Blend mode (Blend Mode): “Dimming the base (Color burn)
  • Opacity (Opacity): 55%

Gradient Overlay“(Gradient Overlay)

  • Blend mode (Blend Mode): “Dimming Base” (Color Burn)
  • Check the box “Dithering“(Dither)
  • Opacity (Opacity): 50%
  • Gradient Type (Style): “Mirror”(Reflected)
  • Angle (Angle): 90 degrees
  • Scale (Scale): 125%
  • Gradient (Gradient): Click on the gradient bar and apply the following colors: left (#ffffff) and right (# d7d7d7)

And so you gave a little style to the background, so that the text would look beautiful in the future.

Step 2

Add a correction layer “Levels“(Levels). To do this, click on the icon of the divided circle at the bottom of the layers panel, as shown in the screenshot below.

Set the center slider to (1.04) and also apply “Clipping mask“(Create clipping mask).

Translator’s Note: to create a clipping mask hold the key Alt, hover the mouse between the layers and left click.

Select a texture layer and adjustment layer. ”Levels”(Levels) and duplicate them by pressing keys (Ctrl + J). Merge copies of the layers by pressing the key combination (Ctrl + E) or select them and go to Layers-Merge Layers (Layer> Merge Layers). Rename the resulting merged layer to “High Pass” (Color Contrast).

On the “High Pass” layer, go to Filter-Other-Color Contrast (Filter> Other> High Pass) and set the slider to 10 pixels.

Install blending mode (Blend Mode) for the “High Pass” layer (Color Contrast) on “Soft light” (Soft light). This will give the texture a little expressiveness.

Step 3

Tool “Horizontal text (Horisontal text tool), using the font “Double Feature”, write the text in color (# 72a726) by size (Size) 250 points with value “Tracking ” (Tracking) at 25.

Duplicate the text layer once and change the level. “Fill” (Fill) copy of the text layer to 0%. Then duplicate a copy of the text layer three more times.

Step 4

Double-click on the original text layer with the left mouse button and apply the following styles with the appropriate parameters:

Stamping“(Bevel and Emboss)

  • Depth (Depth): 130%
  • The size (Size): 25 pixels.
  • Softening(Soften): 9 pixels.
  • Uncheck “Global coverage“(Global Light)

  • Height (Altitude): 58 degrees
  • Gloss contour (Gloss Contour): “Inverted Cone” (Cone – Inverted)
  • Check the box “Smoothing“(Anti-aliased)
  • Modebacklight(Highlight Mode): “Brightshine”(Linear Light)

  • The size(Size): 250 pixels.

Gradient Overlay“(Gradient Overlay)

  • Blend mode (Blend Mode): “Multiplication“(Multiply)
  • Opacity (Opacity): 100%
  • Click on the color bar of the gradient and set the following colors: left (# d7d7d7) and right (#ffffff)

  • Colour: (# 8db354)
  • Opacity (Opacity): 75%
  • Uncheck “Global coverage“(Global Light)
  • Angle (Angle): 91 degrees
  • Bias (Distance): 58 pix.
  • The size (Size): 15 pixels.

Click on the plus sign icon next to the “Drop Shadow” parameter to duplicate this parameter. Go to a copy of the Drop Shadow parameter and apply the following values:

Shadow 2“(Drop Shadow 2)

  • Color classification: (# 9dbe6b)
  • Angle(Angle): -67
  • Bias (Distance): 36 pix.
  • The size (Size): 15 pixels.

Step 5

Double-click the first copy of the text layer with the left mouse button and apply the following styles with the appropriate parameters:

Stamping (Bevel and Emboss)

  • Depth (Depth): 135%
  • The size (Size): 9 pixels.
  • Softening(Soften): 3px
  • Uncheck “Global coverage“(Global Light)
  • Angle (Angle): -35 degrees
  • Height (Altitude): 26 degrees
  • Gloss contour (Gloss Contour): “Rounded steps“(Rounded Steps)

  • Modethe shadows (Shadow Mode): “Multiply” (Multiply)
  • Colour: (# 37462c)
  • Opacity (Opacity): 0%

Circuit“(Contour)

  • Contour: “Double Ring” (Ring – Double)
  • Check the box “ Smoothing“(Anti-aliased)

These parameters will give expression to the edges of the text.

Step 6

Double-click the second copy of the text layer with the left mouse button and apply the following styles with the appropriate parameters:

Stamping“(Bevel and Emboss)

  • Depth (Depth): 100%
  • The size (Size): 38 pixels.
  • Softening (Soften): 2px
  • Uncheck “Global coverage“(Global Light)

“Texture” (Texture)

  • Pattern (Pattern): №6 from the “Flesh Textures” set
  • Depth (Depth): 100%

And at this stage the lesson ends. In the image below, you can see the final result, which is the result of “layering” the added styles on the text layers.
