Create text from metal rivets in Photoshop

?

This tutorial will show you how to create text from metal rivets on a denim background by applying layer styles and a simple brush in Photoshop.

Before performing the lesson you need to load additional contours:

You may need some of the contours that were used in some layer styles. To download them, go to Editing – Sets – Set Management (Edit – Presets – Preset Manager), and select Contours (Contours) from the drop-down menu with types of sets.

Click on the little arrow in the upper right corner and select Contours (Contours).

Click the button To add (Append) to add new contours to existing ones.

Step 1

Open the image “FabricPlain0067”, then click on the icon Create a new adjustment layer (Create new fill or adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers panel and select Levels (Levels).

Change value Shadows (Shadows) by 15 to darken our texture a bit. You can later change this value if the need arises.

Create the text using the font Ethon, or choose any other font that you see fit. Font size – 350 points (pt) value tracking (Tracking): 50.

Step 2

Choose a tool Brush (Brush Tool) and open the brush settings panel Window – Brush (Window> Brush). Select a hard round brush of 30 pixels and change the value Intervals (Spacing) at 131.

Create a new layer on top of the text and name it “1”. Set as color foreground (Foreground color) # 726023, after which, start adding rivets over your text.

To make it easier to describe the letters, you can do the following:

  1. Click, press, and hold the Shift key, then drag to create a straight line (rivets will go in a straight line).
  2. Or another option. Click once where you want the line to start (out of rivets), press and hold the Shift key, then click again where you would like the line to end.

Stroke (Stroke)

You do not have to follow the exact form of the letters. You can freely make your own settings, as you create these rivets.

Step 3

For more complex letters, with different curves in its composition (such as the letter S), you can use the tool Pen (Pen Tool), in drawing mode contour (Path) to create work path (work path), in which you can then draw a stroke with a brush.

You can click once to create anchor points, or click and drag to create curves. Just draw the basic shape of the letter, and then you can change it as shown below.

Choose a tool “Node allocation” (Direct Selection Tool) to modify our outline. You can click and drag the anchor point by turning it, or you can click the points at the ends of the tangents, then move them around to change the direction of the curve, or drag them out or inwards to make the curve wider or narrower, respectively.

Once you have done this, right-click on the work path and select the option in the menu Outline the contour (Stroke Path).

Select Brush (Brush) from the drop-down menu in the dialog that opens and click OK, then click Input (Enter) to exit the work path mode.

If you added rivets to all letters, make the original text layer invisible by clicking on the eye icon next to the layer thumbnail.

Duplicate the “1” layer, rename this copy to “2”, then change the value fillings (Fill) to 0. Now duplicate this layer and rename it to “3”.

Step 4

Double click on the “1” layer to activate Layer style (Layer Style) and enter the following parameters for it:

Stamping (Bevel and Emboss)

  • Methods (Technique): Tough faceting (Chisel Hard)
  • Depth (Depth): 1000
  • The size (Size): 3
  • Circuit gloss (Gloss Contour): Ring (Ring)
  • Check the checkbox Smoothing (Anti-aliased)
  • Backlight mode (Highlight Mode): Linear light (Linear Light)

Circuit (Contour)

  • Circuit (Contour): Cone (Cone)
  • Check the checkbox Smoothing (Anti-aliased)

Stroke (Stroke)

  • The size (Size): 1
  • Position (Position): Centered (Center)
  • Fill Type (Fill Type): Gradient (Gradient)
  • Style (Style): Mirror (Reflected)
  • Angle (Angle): 90

Click on the gradient type box to create a gradient.

To create a gradient, you need to click below the panels with a gradient, each click will add a stop beacon for a particular color, then you must click on each of the beacons to enter the desired color and location in the gradient. The following are the color and location values for our gradient (from left to right):

Color – Location

  • # 2c2410 – 0
  • # f6ee91 – 19
  • # 2f2d13 – 37
  • # f9f3c3 – 63
  • # 302e17 – 82
  • # faf2b2 – 100

Inner shadow (Inner Shadow)

  • Opacity (Opacity): 20%
  • Distance (Distance): 3

Internal glow (Inner Glow)

  • Blend mode (Blend Mode): Linear light (Linear Light)
  • Noise (Noise): 100%
  • Colour (Color): # b6b6b6
  • A source (Source): From the center (Center)
  • The size (Size): 25

Shadow (Drop Shadow)

  • Blend mode (Blend Mode): Linear dimmer (Linear Burn)
  • The size (Size): 9

So we created the first layer with rivets

Step 5

Double click on the layer “2” activate Layer style (Layer Style) and enter the following parameters for it:

Stamping (Bevel and Emboss)

  • The size (Size): 13
  • Uncheck checkbox Global coverage (Use Global Light)
  • Angle (Angle): 135
  • Height (Altitude): 48
  • Style (Style): Inner bevel (Inner Bevel)
  • Methods (Technique): Smooth (Smooth)
  • Depth (Depth): 100
  • The size (Size): 3
  • Gloss contour (Gloss Contour): Rounded steps (Rounded Steps)
  • Check the checkbox Smoothing (Anti-aliased)
  • Backlight mode (Highlight Mode): Bright light (Vivid Light)

Circuit (Contour)

  • Circuit (Contour): Log (Report)
  • Check the checkbox Smoothing (Anti-aliased)

So we styled the second layer:

Step 6

Double click on layer “3” activate Layer style (Layer Style) and enter the following parameters for it:

Stamping (Bevel and Emboss)

  • Methods (Technique): Tough faceting (Chisel Hard)
  • Depth (Depth): 100
  • The size (Size): 5
  • Circuit gloss (Gloss Contour): Triple Ring (Ring – Triple)
  • Check the checkbox Smoothing (Anti-aliased)
  • Shadow mode (Shadow Mode): Opacity (Opacity): 0%
  • Backlight mode (Highlight Mode): Overlay (Overlay)

Circuit (Contour)

  • Circuit (Contour): Ring (Ring)
  • Check the checkbox Smoothing (Anti-aliased)

This stylizes our last layer with rivets.

Step 7

Click on the icon Create adjustment layer (Create new fill or adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers palette and select Gradient map (Gradient Map)

Create a gradient using the colors # 0a1e59 on the left and # ffc600 on the right. Then change blending mode (Blend Mode) for this adjustment layer on Blackout basics (color burn) and lower opacity (Opacity) layer up to 20%.

Step 8

Click on the icon Create adjustment layer (Create new fill or adjustment layer) at the bottom of the layers palette and select Gradient (Gradient).

Choose a gradient from transparent to fill color, and set the values to #dfdbba on the left and # 5b5b5b on the right. Change style (Style) gradient on radial (Radial) angle (Angle) 90 degrees and scale (Scale) 350.

Change blending mode (Blend Mode) of this adjustment layer on Linear dimmer (Linear Burn), and his opacity (Opacity) up to 35%. This will make our end result a little darker and add a slight effect to a nice ornament.

Conclusion

This is our final result. A really simple way to stroke a contour and use layer styles to make it more interesting. I hope you enjoyed this lesson and found it useful for yourself.
