Gloomy text in Photoshop

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a dark text effect using layer styles.

Material for the lesson:

Step 1

Create a new document with a size of 600 x 400 pixels in RGB mode, a resolution of 72 DPI and a white background. Install the font and open the .pat file.

Step 2

First we need to create a suitable background. To do this, right-click on the background layer and select Layer from Background (Layer from the background). In the window that appears, write the name of the layer and click OK. Next, go Layer – Layer Style – Blending Options (Layer – Layer Style – Blending Options) and apply the parameters for Inner glow (Internal glow), Pattern overlay (Texture overlay), Satin (Gloss), Color overlay (Overlay color) Gradient overlay (Gradient overlay).

There are two more quick and convenient ways to activate layer styles. The fastest way is to double-click the layer on the layers panel with the left button. You can also click on the layer with the right mouse button and select in the context menu Blending options (Overlay options). When finished with layer styles, click OK.

Step 3

Now we can start creating a text effect. Activate Type tool (Text) (T), select the font Times New Yorker, set the size to 174 pt and anti-aliasing on Sharp (Cutting). In the center of the document we write any word.

Step 4

Move on Layer – Layer Style – Blending Options (Layer – Layer Style – Blending Options) and apply text parameters to Pattern overlay(Texture overlay), Drop shadow (Shadow), Inner shadow (Inner Shadow), Outer glow (External glow), Inner glow (Internal glow), Bevel / Emboss (Emboss / Bevel), Contor (Circuit), Texture (Texture), Satin (Gloss), Color overlay (Overlay color) Gradient overlay (Gradient overlay) Stroke (Stroke).

To invoke layer styles, you can use the faster methods described in the second step. When finished with the overlay options, click OK. The main work on creating a text effect is done.

Step 5

Now duplicate the text layer. Layer – Duplicate Layer (Layer – Create a duplicate layer) (Ctrl + J). Then apply Layer – Layer Style – Clear Layer Style (Layer – Layer Style – Clear Layer Style), as we will apply other layer style options to Blending options (Overlay options), Drop shadow (Shadow).

When finished, click OK. Duplicate text is needed to add a shadow, so it must be under the original.
