With the help of various brush settings in Photoshop, we can create various effects and textures. In this tutorial, I will show you how to create text from flour using brushes and layer styles. So let’s get started!
Final result
1. Create a background
Step 1
Create a new document with the following dimensions 1250 x 800px, install Resolution (Resolution) 200.
Open the tree texture. Move this texture to our working paper, placing it on top of the layer with the background. Apply scaling as needed. Next, go Filter – Noise – Add Noise (Filter> Noise> Add Noise). Apply the settings for this filter, which are shown in the screenshot below.
Step 2
Next, add an adjustment layer. Levels (Levels). Set the value Gammas (Gamma) at 0.83.
Step 3
Next, add an adjustment layer. Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation). Set the value Saturation (Saturation) at -24, and the value Brightness (Lightness) at -3.
2. Create layers with main text.
Step 1
Type text using the Patrick Hand font. Font size 135 pt. Install Tracking (Tracking) at 75.
Step 2
Hold down (Ctrl) + click on the thumbnail of the text layer to create an active selection. Next, apply the function To expand (Expand) 5 px selection, including Feathering (Feather) 4 px.
Step 3
Set the foreground color to # f2ece6 and the background color to # e4dfdf. Try to stick to the specified color shades, because we will use them throughout the lesson.
We will name the layers according to their order of arrangement in the layers palette from top to bottom. Therefore, try to give the layers the same names that are mentioned in this lesson.
Create a new layer. Name this layer “4”. Fill the selected area with the foreground color.
3. Circling the work path of the selected area
Step 1
Next, convert the selected area to the work path by clicking Create work contour from selected area (Make work path from selection) in the bottom toolbar of the palette Contours (Paths).
Step 2
Create a new layer, name this layer “6”. Choose a tool Brush (Brush Tool), in the settings of this tool, select Brush 1 from the Flour brush set. Stroke the outline by specifying the selected brush. Next, select the tool Eraser
(Eraser Tool), select brush 2, and stroke the outline again to remove the individual areas.
4. Circling the text work outline
Step 1
Right-click on the text layer and in the window that appears, select the option Create working circuit(Create Work Path). Create a new layer, name this layer “7”, select the tool Brush (Brush Tool), and then stroke the outline with a brush 3 from the Flour brush set.
Step 2
Create a new layer, name this layer “5”, stroke the outline three times using brush 4, and then select the tool Eraser (Eraser Tool) and on, stroke a stroke once using brush 5.
Step 3
Create a new layer, name this layer “3”. Stroke the contour using brush 6, and then select the tool Eraser (Eraser Tool) and onwards, stroke using the same brush.
5. Circle the work path of the central part of the text.
Step one
Next, hold down (Ctrl) + click on the thumbnail of the original text layer to load the active selection, and then apply the function Compress (Contract) at 10 px.
Step 2
Convert the active selection to the work path. Create a new layer, name this layer “1”. Next, select the tool Brush (Brush Tool), select brush 2 from the set, change the brush size to 10 px, and stroke the outline with the selected brush. Now you will not see any difference, you will see the result later when you apply layer styles.
Step 3
Create another new layer, name this layer “2”, then paint a stroke using brush 7.
Step 4
Create another new layer, name this layer “8”. Hold down (Ctrl) + click on the thumbnail of layer “4” to create an active selection, and then convert the active selection to the work path.
Using brush 8, stroke the outline. Next, select the tool Eraser (Eraser Tool), reduce the eraser’s opacity to 65%, and stroke the outline using the same brush (8).
Increase the opacity back to 100%, and stroke the outline two or three times using brush 5, and brush 9 once.
Once you are done, delete the work path. Make sure that the layers are arranged in the exact order according to their ordinal number.
6. Apply styling to layer “1” and “2”
Step 1
Double click on the “1” layer. Apply layer style Stamping (Bevel and Emboss) with the following settings:
Uncheck the box Global coverage (Use Global Light)
Angle (Angle): 73
Height (Altitude): 37
Tick in the box Smoothing (Anti-aliased)
Shadow mode (Shadow Mode) – Colour (Color): # 786c58
So, we applied styling to the first layer.
Step 2
Change the blending mode for layer “1” to Darkening basics (Color Burn), and also reduce the opacity of the layer to 60%. Copy / paste the layer styles to the “2” layer.
7. Apply styling to layer “3”
Copy the layer styles that we applied to the “1” layer, and then paste to the “3” layer. Next, double click on the “3” layer to change the values for the layer style. Stamping (Bevel and Emboss). Change Angle (Angle) at 49, Height (Altitude) at 42.
So, we applied styling to the third layer.
8. Apply styling to layer “4”
Double click on layer “4” to apply the following layer styles:
Step 1
Apply layer style Stamping (Bevel and Emboss) with the following settings:
The size (Size): 25
Uncheck the box Global coverage (Use Global Light)
Angle (Angle): 49
Height (Altitude): 42
Tick in the box Smoothing (Anti-aliased)
Shadow mode (Shadow Mode) – Colour (Color): # 9a8f7c
Step 2
Next, apply a layer style. Texture (Texture) with the following settings:
Pattern (Pattern): Clouds (Clouds)
Depth (Depth): 25%
Step 3
Apply layer style Shadow (Drop Shadow) with the following settings:
Colour (Color): # 544e4c
Opacity (Opacity): 15%
Bias (Distance): 10
The size(Size): 15
So, we applied styling to the fourth layer.
9. Apply styling to the layer “5”, “7”. Apply filters to layer “6”
Step 1
Copy the layer styles that we applied to the “3” layer, and then paste to the “5” layer. Next, double click on the “5” layer to change the settings and add effects.
In the settings for the layer style Stamping (Bevel and Emboss), change The size (Size) at 20.
Step 2
Apply layer style Texture (Texture) with the following settings:
Pattern (Pattern): Clouds (Clouds)
Depth (Depth): 10%
Step 3
So, we applied styling to layer “5”. Convert the “6” layer to a Smart Object, and then reduce the gap.
layer opacity up to 80%.
Step four
Next, go Filter – Blur – Blur on the surface (Filter> Blur> Surface Blur), set the value Radius (Radius) at 3, and the value Threshold (Threshold) at 50.
Step 5
Copy the layer styles that we applied to the “5” layer, and then paste to the “7” layer.
10. Working on the “8” layer
Step 1
Convert the layer “8” to the Smart Object, and then reduce the opacity of this layer to 50%.
Next, we will feather the edges of the flour around the text. To do this, create an oval selection around the text, including the edges of the text you want to shade, and then apply the shading value as you like to the highlighted area. Next, to layer “8”, add a layer mask to shade the edges.
Step 2
Next, go Filter – Blur – Blur on the surface (Filter> Blur> Surface Blur), set the value Radius (Radius) at 3, and the value Threshold (Threshold) at 15.
Step 3
Next, go Filter – Sharpness – Smart sharpness(Filter> Sharpen> Smart Sharpen). Apply the settings to your liking, adding detail and clarity to this layer.
Since we converted this layer into a smart object, then we can change the filter settings at any time.
11. Add a shadow
Step 1
Create a new layer below the “8” layer, name this layer “Shadow”. Reduce value Fillings (Fill) for this layer to 0.
Step 2
Double click the “Shadow” layer to apply the layer style. Color overlay (Color Overlay):
Apply layer style Color overlay (Color Overlay) with the following settings:
Colour (Color): # a6a497
Blend mode (Blend Mode): Linear dimmer (Linear Burn)
Opacity (Opacity): 30%
Step 3
Next, using a soft brush, darken the areas behind the text.
12. Add flour residues
Step 1
Create a new layer on top of the “Shadow” layer, name the new layer “Flour Remains”. Next, select any brush from the set of grunge brushes. Click a brush a couple of times around the text, just don’t brush to create an effect with flour residues.
Step 2
What we need to do next is to repeat the previous steps, creating new layers and applying layer styles to them, just as you did with the text. If you want, the action with the function Compress (Contract) selected area, you can not hold.
Group all layers with the remains of flour in one group, name the new group “The remains of flour”.
Step 3
To the layer with the “Flour Remains” group, add a layer mask. Next, select any brush from the second set of grunge brushes. Click with a brush, but do not brush with a brush to hide certain areas of flour in the center and / or at the edges of the flour residues.
You can use different brushes, different brush diameters, as well as varying degrees of brush opacity to get the result you like.
13. We carry out the correction of the final result
Step one
Add a new adjustment layer Gradient (Gradient). The gradient colors are # f2ece6 on the left and # 8e857d on the right to create a gradient from a transparent hue to a translucent hue. Install Style (Style) gradient on Radial (Radial) as well as install Scale (Scale) by 450%.
Step 2
Position the adjustment layer Gradient (Gradient) on top of all other layers in the layers palette. Also change the blending mode for this adjustment layer to Linear dimmer (Linear Burn).
Step 3
Select all the layers we created except for the adjustment layer. Gradient (Gradient). Duplicate the selected layers, and then create a merged layer from duplicate layers. Name the merged layer “Color Contrast”. Convert the “Color Contrast” layer into a Smart Object.
Next, go Filter – Other – Color Contrast (Filter> Other> High Pass), set Radius (Radius) at 10.
Step 4
Change the blending mode for the layer with Color contrast (High Pass) on Soft light (Soft Light), and also reduce the opacity of the layer to 35%.
Step five
Finally, reduce the opacity value for the “4” layer inside the “Flour Remains” group to 80%.
Congratulations! We have completed the lesson.
In this tutorial, we created a background from a wood texture, and then added simple text.
Next, we worked on the selection, working circuits, and we also worked with brushes and filters to create different layers of flour.
Next, we applied styling to the created layers, and then created layers with flour residues. We used a feather and mask to better combine the various elements.
In conclusion, we used a correction layer, and also applied a simple filter to enhance the final result.
