Making a garland of flags in Photoshop

In this tutorial, I propose to create you a simple beautiful congratulatory banner using Photoshop.

A text banner is a very simple and at the same time functional picture. You can always personalize this image, or by making small changes and create a greeting card for any holiday!

So as a result of the lesson, we get a quality workpiece, which everyone can use in various projects.
Let’s start!

To complete the lesson we will use:
– program: Photoshop CC;
– elapsed time: 30 – 90 minutes;

Step 1

Create a new document:
– size: 10 x 11 cm;
– Resolution: 300 pixels \ inch;
– color mode: CMYK

Set up a ruler in the workspace: Preview – Ruler (View – Rulers (Ctrl / Cmd + R)). Then you need to add a binding: View – Snap to – Guides (View – Snap To – Guides).

In order to set the units of measure for the ruler, right-click on the vertical or horizontal scale of the ruler and in the list that appears, determine the desired unit of measure. In this lesson I will use centimeters (cm).

Let’s place the guides! Hold down the left mouse button – move it to the border of the vertical ruler and drag the first guide. Place it at a distance of 1 cm from the left edge of the canvas.

Using a similar work pattern, add vertical and horizontal guides as shown in the example below.

On the toolbar, activate the tool Polygon (Polygon Tool). Set the number of sides to 3. Hold down the Shift key and draw an equilateral triangle on a new layer. Place the shape as shown in the image below.

Then activate the tool Arrow (Direct Selection Tool). Click on one of the corners of the triangle.

Using the anchor points of the triangle, drag the top corners to the intersection points of the guides.

The top of the triangle, place at the intersection of the central and lower horizontal guides. Thus, you get a shape clearly located in the center of the canvas.

Step 2

Double-click the triangle layer with the left mouse button. This will take you to the menu. Layer style. In this menu, go to settings Pattern overlay (Pattern Overlay).

Use any color paper pattern you like for your triangle. After you decide on the type of pattern, you can correct Scale (Scale) textures, in this example, I use a scale value of 70%.

You can also change the location of the pattern. To do this, simply hover over the working canvas with a pattern, hold down the left mouse button and drag the pattern.

If you do not use the proposed set of “color paper”, you can decorate the triangle otherwise. Select the image you want to place on the triangle. Drag it into the main working canvas and place it above the triangle layer. Apply this image as clipping mask (clipping mask) to the triangle layer.

Activate the tool Ellipse (Ellipse Tool). In the tool settings, go to Geometric Panel (Geometry Settings) and check the box next to “From the cent“(From Center).

Hold key Shift, hover the mouse over the center guide and draw a circle inside the triangle. The size of the circle, you can choose arbitrarily, and later, if necessary, adjust it.

Refer to the circle shape settings panel. Add a stroke around the contour of the circle, the color of the stroke – # 59c2aa, The size of the stroke (size) is 3 pt, the position of the stroke is outside (outside). Also change the fill color (fill) of the shape itself to # fef5e0.
If you use a different pattern or texture for your triangle, you can experiment with different colors for the stroke and the fill of the circle.

Duplicate the circle layer. Then go to Editing – Contour Transform – Scaling (Edit – Transform Path – Scale).

Now reduce the size of the duplicate shape. In order not to lose proportions and produce a transformation from the center of the circle, hold down and hold the key combination when scaling Shift + Alt. When you get the desired size of the copy circle, press the Enter key to apply the changes.

Do not forget that when working with shapes, you can adjust their settings and appearance. For example, for a new shape, we can change the type of stroke by selecting the type of stroke in the settings panel – a dotted one.

Step 3

Go to the triangle layer and create a copy of this layer.

Standing on a copy layer with a triangle, go to Editing – Free transform (Edit – Free Transform). On the settings panel, set the transformation point, as shown in the image below.

Then go back to Editing – Transform – Flip Vertical (Edit – Transform – Flip Vertical). Press Enter to make changes.

Activate the tool Rectangle (Rectangle Tool). In the settings, set the function “Subtract the figure area»(Subtract Front Shape). Then, standing on a layer with an inverted triangle, draw a rectangle that covers almost the entire area of the triangle, leaving only a small part of the triangle.

Click on the “Contour operations” icon and select the action “Merge components“(Merge Shape Components).

Activate the tool Arrow (Direct Selection Tool (A)). Using this tool, activate the upper reference points of the trapezoid. Then go Editing – Transforming – Scaling (Edit – Transform Points – Scale). Holding the key combination Shift + Alt slightly scale the trapezoid. To apply the new scale, press the Enter key.

Reduce the fill (fill) of the trapezoid layer to 0%, and then add a stroke in the settings: the stroke type is dotted; position – inside; size – 1 pt.

Now you have a good blank for a festive flag, which you can print. Due to the fact that we have created a spine circled by a dotted line, the flag can be easily hung on the tape, bending and gluing the spine!

Step 4

Now let’s fill the box. For this, I will use the tool Horizontal text (Horizontal Type Tool) and the font “Sofia”. In the tincture of the text, set the size of the letters – 150 pt and color 399782. Write the desired letter in the center of the circle. Instead of a letter, you can add any shape or symbol.

Merge all layers (except background) into a single group. Duplicate this group. Now you can expand the group-copy and make the necessary changes: replace the letter, choose a different pattern from the “Colored paper” set, etc. …

In the same way, you can create the required number of checkboxes with different symbols.

At this stage, you can already use the result for printing!
In addition, you can apply our work for various collages.

Step 5

Open the “Fence” texture in Photoshop. Activate the tool Frame (Crop Tool) and frame your own texture. You can also postpone cropping to the final step and use the Crop Tool when the work is complete.

Standing on a wooden texture, go to Image – Correction – Levels (Image – Adjustments – Levels). Change the value of the highlight slider to 245.

Choose a tool Pen (Pen Tool). In the settings of this tool set the drawing mode “Paths” (Path). Draw a curve as shown in the example below.

If you need to adjust the shape of the curve, use the tool Arrow (Direct Selection Tool (A)).

Activate the tool Brush (Brush Tool). Set the following settings for the tool: size – 3 pixels, hardness – 100%, color – # f0f0ee.
Create a new layer on top of the background, name this layer “Thread”. Then activate the tool Arrow (Direct Selection Tool (A)). Right-click on the previously created contour-arc. In the sub-menu that appears, select “Outline the contour“(Stroke Path), and set the” Brush “as a stroke tool. To remove the contour visibility, press Enter.

Now we will post our holiday flags.
In order to do this, go back to the document with the checkboxes, and select all groups. Then go to Layer – Duplicate Layers (Layer – Duplicate Layers). Move the copies of the groups into the wood-textured paper.

In order to make the work more comfortable, we merge each group into a single layer. To do this, go to one of the groups with a flag and go to Layer – Merge Layers (Layer – Merge Group (Ctrl / Cmd + E)). Repeat the merge for each group.
When instead of groups you get layers, select all layers with checkboxes and scale them (Editing – Free Transform (Edit – Free Transform (Ctrl / Cmd + T)). Change the size of the checkboxes to your own taste. To apply a transformation, press Enter.

Then you need to rotate each box and place it on a string. To do this, also use the transformation (Ctrl / Cmd + T)).

Step 6

Add some volume. To do this, we will use the Layer Style menu. Stand on the layer with the first flag and double-click on it with the left mouse button. Enter the settings shown below:

Internal glow (Inner Glow)

Shadow (Drop Shadow)

Now the edge of the flag looks better:

Right-click on the layer to which we just applied the layer styles. In the appeared submenu use the function “Copy layer style»(Copy Layer Style). Then select all remaining layers with checkboxes, once again right-click on them and in the submenu select the function “Paste style layer»(Paste Layer Style).

Using the menu Layer style (Layer Style), add a drop shadow.

Merge all layers with checkboxes into a single group “Flags”.

Step 7

Click on the “Create New Adjustment Layer” icon at the bottom of the layers panel and add an adjustment layer. Gradient map (Gradient Map).

In the gradient settings, set the colors to # bbb07 and #ffffff. Blend mode (in the next mod) of the Gradient Map adjustment layer change to Multiplication (Multiply), and lower the opacity (opacity) to 20%.

Add another adjustment layer called Gradient (Gradient). In the settings, set the gradient type – radial, scale – 300, angle – 90, transition color from transparent – to # a7a297 – to # b3a78c.

Set the blending mode of the second adjustment layer to Linear dimmer (Linear Burn), and opacity (opacity) – 20%.

Step 8

Clamp the combination Ctrl / Cmd + click Click on the thumbnail of the layer with a flag to create a selection along the contour of the triangle.

Now hold down the key combination Ctrl + Shift + click by the next thumbnail layer with a flag in order to add another selection to the existing one.

Using a combination Ctrl + Shift + click On the layer thumbnail, create a selection along the outline of all checkboxes.

Create a new group inside the Flags group (Pennants) and name it “Texture Overlay”. Then click on the “Add layer mask” icon. As a result, a layer mask filled with black will be added to the group, and the previously selected checkbox will be displayed in white.

Open the Paper image and place the texture inside the Texture Overlay group. As needed, scale the texture so that it covers all checkboxes. Change the paper overlay mode to Light replacement (Lighten) and lower the opacity (opacity) to 50%.

Add a correction layer above the paper layer. Levels (Levels).

In the mid-tones level settings, lower the value to 0.7, this will make the image more saturated.

You can also go back to the wooden texture layer and adjust it a little using the tool. Spot Healing Brush (Spot Healing Brush Tool). In the settings tool set a round, soft brush size of 30 pixels. and hide the areas that you feel unnecessary. This step is optional.

At this my lesson is over! I hope it will be useful to you!
