In this lesson, using Photoshop, we will add the effect of curled paper (quilling effect) to the text.
The main resource which we will use in this lesson is an action called “Quilling Photoshop Action”). Click on the action name, and go to the page to download the work file.
Then open the downloaded archive. In it you will find the ABR, PAT and ATN Photoshop files. To perform the following actions, we need the ABR and PAT files (brushes and patterns).
To install them go to Editing – Manage Sets (Edit> Preset Manager). In the menu, select the type of set (preset type) – “Brushes” and install the ABR files. Then change the type of the set to “Patterns” and install the PAT files.
Let’s proceed to the installation of action. To install the action in Photoshop go to Window – Operations (ALT + F9 (Window> Actions)). In the upper right part of the “Operations” menu, click on the mini-triangle and in the list that appears, find the item “Load operations“(Load Actions).
After the successful installation of the “QUILLING” action, you will see in the list of operations 6 new actions that can be used both for text / and for various shapes and bitmaps.
Inside the archive file you will also find a PSD file called “quilling-by-psddude.psd”. Open this file in a new document. This PSD file consists of several groups with layers that will help us create the desired paper effect.
Become a layer called “ADD YOUR TEXT / SHAPE INSIDE”. Please note that this layer is a smart object. Double-click the left mouse button on the thumbnail with the designation of the smart object in order to open the settings of the object.
In the body of the smart object, you will see an empty layer called “ADD YOUR SIGN AND RUN THE ACTION” (“ADD YOUR ITEM and PLAY AN ACTION”). Now, all you need to do is add the letters, shape or symbol you want to convert to this empty layer.
For example, I will write the letter “Q” on this layer using a font called “Intro”. To make the final result look better, use a large font (or a large figure).
Let’s move on to the twisting process. First you need to choose one of the six proposed actions. I will use a set of actions called “quilling with border (unicolor)”.
I remind you that we are still inside the smart object. Standing on the layer with your character, and selecting the desired action, click on the mini-button Take out an active operation (Рlay). Wait a few seconds, giving the program time to apply a set of actions.
After applying the action you get approximately the same result as in the picture. Also in the image you can see the scheme of the working layers.
In order to return to the main workspace and evaluate the result, you need to save the file with the smart object and close it.
Translator’s Note: You can simply click on the cross next to the name of the file with the smart object (at the top of the working field). When the program requests permission to save the changes just click “Yes.”
In this part we will pay attention to some manual adjustments: color correction, adding layer styles, working with brushes.
Double-click the left mouse button on the layer “ADD YOUR SIGN and START THE ACTION” (“ADD YOUR ITEM and PLAY AN ACTION”) to go to the settings “Layer style“(Layer style). In the style settings menu, select”Pattern overlay“(Pattern Overlay). Choose a pattern type called” quilling 3 by psddude “(you can of course choose a different pattern from the set, for example” quilling 2 by psddude “or” quilling 1 by psddude “).
Scale (Scale) pattern – 50%.
To apply a layer style, click “Ok.”
Stand on the “quilling 1 by psddude” layer. Double-click the left mouse button on this layer. On the menu “Layer style“(Layer style) select” Color overlay “(Color overlay). Using this setting you can add any shade.
Add another layer style – “Stroke“(Stroke). This layer style should be applied to the layers, which are indicated in the figure below. Settings for the Stroke style: size (size) – 2 pixels, color – # efb76c; position – outside.
We are working on adding additional elements. You noticed that there is an empty layer in the layers scheme, which is called “add details using the quilling brushes”. In the file that you downloaded at the beginning of the lesson, there is an archive with thematic brushes. Add these brushes to the Photoshop library. Then activate the tool Brush (Brush Too), choose the shape of the brush from the set that you like best and decorate your work. You can experiment with the size, color and rotation angle of the brush.
Save the smart object and close it in order to evaluate the overall result.
In the layer diagram, you can also see a layer called “ADD THE ORIGINAL SHAPE / TEXT” (“Add Form / Text”). Use this layer to add additional text or an ornament.
In the end result, you will get this interesting effect:
Do not forget that the archive with files for this lesson includes many useful additions. Thanks to this, you can create various interesting processing of different objects.
