Final result
In this quick Photoshop tutorial, we will demonstrate how to create the Sergeant America movie text effect using layer styles. Let’s get started!
Source materials:
Step 1. Create a new .PSD document; size 1000×500 pixels, RGB mode (mode), resolution (resolution) 100 ppi and gray background (# 33333). Create a new layer and fill it with a metallic texture. Now write the text using the font Captain America (American Captain).
Apply the settings shown in the images below. Set the interval between characters (character spacing) 80. Now rename the layer to “3D base” (“3D Base”). Next, go to the menu Layer> Layer Styles> Blend Options (Layer> Layer Styles> Blending Options), Use these settings:
Shadow: Blend Mode – Multiply, Opacity 75%, Angle 90, Use Global Illumination, Offset 13, Span 9, Size 38.
Inner shadow: Blend Mode – Multiply, Opacity 57%, Angle 90, Use Global Illumination, Offset 10, Contrast 2, Size 16.
External glow: Blend Mode – Multiply, Opacity 41, Noise 0, Soft Method, Span 0, Size 29, Range 50.
Internal luminescence: The blend mode is Screen, Opacity 14, Noise 0, Soft Method, Source: Edge, 0, Size 62, Range 100, Oscillation 0.
Stamping: Inner Bevel Style, Hard Cut Method, Depth 857, Down Direction, Size 4, Softening 0, Angle 90, Use Global Illumination, Height 30, Backlight Mode – Brightening the Base, Opacity 100, Shadow Mode – Brightening, Opacity 60.
Gloss: Blend Mode – Multiply, Opacity 95, Angle 19, Offset 103, Size 38, Antialiasing, Invert.
Color overlay: Blend Mode – Multiply, Opacity 67.
Gradient overlay: Blend mode – Screen, Opacity 40, gradient from white to black, Style – Linear, Align to layer, Angle 90, Scale 100.
Pattern Overlay: Blend Mode – Normal, Opacity 100, Scale 75.
Step 2. Duplicate the text layer and rename it to “3D Base BEVEL”. Right-click on the layer, from the pop-up menu, select Clear layer styles (Clear Layer Style).
Or in the style window click on the icon “Default style (No)” (“Default style (None)”), You will get a similar result. In the overlay settings set fill (fill) 20%. Next, go to Layer menu> Layer style> Blending options (Layer> Layer Styles> Blending Options) and apply these settings:
Shadow: Blend Mode – Multiply, Opacity 59%, Angle 90, Use Global
lighting, Offset 0, Swipe 9, Size 40.
Inner shadow: Blend Mode – Overlap, Opacity 100%, Angle 90, Use Global Illumination, Offset 3, Contrast 2, Size 21.
Internal luminescence: Blend Mode – Base Brightening, Opacity 100, Noise 0, Exact Method, Source: Edge, Blow 5, Size 7, Range 100, Oscillation 0.
Stamping: Style Emboss, Smooth, Depth 490, Direction Down, Size 8, Soften 0, Angle 90, Use Global Illumination, Height 30, Backlight Mode – Overlap, Opacity 56, Shadow Mode – Multiplication, Opacity 90.
Gloss: Blend Mode – Overlap, Opacity 100, Angle 19, Offset 36, Size 16, Anti-aliasing.
Color overlay: Blend Mode – Overlap, Opacity 100.
Pattern Overlay: Blend Mode – Normal, Opacity 100, Scale 50.
Stroke: Size 3, Position Inside, Blend Mode – Normal, Opacity 100, Type
Stroke Pattern, Scale 100.
Step 3. Duplicate the text layer again and name it “Text Base”. Right click on this layer, select Clear layer styles (Clear Layer Style). Or in the style window click on the icon “Default style (No)” (“Default style (None)”), You will get a similar result.
Install character spacing 100 and move a little layer to create a 3D effect, as shown in the image below.
Next, go to the menu Layer> Layer Style> Blend Options (Layer> Layer Styles> Blending Options) and use the following parameters:
Inner shadow: Blend Mode – Overlap, Opacity 100%, Angle 90, Use Global Illumination, Offset 3, Contrast 2, Size 18.
Internal luminescence: The blend mode is Screen, Opacity 14, Noise 0, Soft Method, Source: Edge, 0, Size 62, Range 100, Oscillation 0.
Stamping: Inner Bevel Style, Hard Cut Method, Depth 857, Down Direction, Size 4, Softening 0, Angle 90, Use Global Illumination, Height 30, Backlight Mode – Brightening the Base, Opacity 100, Shadow Mode – Light Swap, Opacity 60.
Gloss: Blend Mode – Multiply, Opacity 77, Angle 19, Offset 13, Size 117, Smoothing, Invert.
Color overlay: Blend Mode – Overlap, Opacity 48.
Gradient overlay: Blend mode – Screen, Opacity 62, gradient from white to black, Style – Linear, Align to layer, Angle 90, Scale 100.
Pattern Overlay: Blend mode – Normal, Opacity 78, Scale 100, Link to layer.
Step 4. Duplicate the “Text Base” layer. Right click on this layer, select Clear layer styles (Clear Layer Style). In the overlay settings set fill20%. Now use these settings in Layer> Layer Style> Blending Options (Layer> Layer Styles> Blending Options).
Inner shadow: Blend Mode – Overlap, Opacity 100%, Angle 90, Use Global Illumination, Offset 3, Contrast 2, Size 21.
Internal luminescence: Blend Mode – Multiply, Opacity 68, Noise 0, Exact Method, Source: Edge, Dip 0, Size 10, Range 100, Oscillation 0.
Stamping: Style: Contour Embossing, Hard Cut Method, Depth 72, Down Direction, Size 3, Softening 0, Angle 90, Use Global Illumination, Height 30, Backlight Mode – Brightening the Foundation, Opacity 53, Shadow Mode – Multiplication, Opacity 71.
Gloss: Blend Mode – Base Brightening, Opacity 67, Angle 19, Offset 103, Size 38, Invert.
Color overlay: Blend Mode – Color, Opacity 100.
Pattern Overlay: Blend mode – Normal, Opacity 100, Scale 100, Link to layer.
Stroke: Size 3, Position Inside, Blend Mode – Normal, Opacity 76, Stroke Type Pattern, Scale 100, Link To Layer.
Step 5. Text effect is ready! Now we will add additional text. Use the settings shown in the images below. Install character spacing about 380 and spacing of the text less 800 Next, go to the menu Layer> Layer Style> Blend Options (Layer> Layer Styles> Blending Options) and use the parameters shown in the screenshots below. Right-click on the “fx” icon on the layer with the bottom text (Super Soldier), select in the pop-up menu “Scale Effect Command”, set the value 59%.
Shadow: Blend Mode – Multiply, Opacity 67%, Angle 90, Use Global Illumination, Offset 7, Span 23, Size 21.
Inner shadow: Blend Mode – Multiply, Opacity 56%, Angle 90, Use Global Illumination, Offset 5, Contrast 0, Size 6, Noise 40.
Stamping: Style Bevel, Hard Cut method, Depth 134, Direction Up, Size 2, Softening 0, Angle 120, Height 36, Backlight Mode – Brightening the Foundation, Opacity 75, Shadow Mode – Multiplication, Opacity 100.
Circuit: Smoothing, Range 47.
Gloss: Blend Mode – Overlap, Opacity 16, Angle 19, Offset 6, Size 17,
Invert, Smoothing.
Color overlay: Blend Mode – Color, Opacity 100.
Pattern Overlay: Blend mode – Normal, Opacity 94, Scale 50, Link to layer.
