This lesson will teach you how to create a colorful paper text effect with holes using various methods: screening text layers, creating outlines, as well as working with a brush. In order to apply color correction to the final result, we will use adjustment layers.
Materials for the lesson:
Create a new document with dimensions of 1600 x 1067 pixels. Place a cardboard texture in the document on top of the background layer. You can rotate and change it as needed.
Write the first letter of the proposed font in the lesson, putting the size of 590 pt. Then choose a bright blue color for the letter # 79bcde.
Duplicate the letter layer and change the copy color to # 252525.
Right click on the copy with the letter and select a function. Rasterize the text (Rasterize Type).
Activate the tool Pen (Pen Tool) and in the top settings panel put the mode Circuit (Path). We need to create an outline in the middle of the letter.
Click the pen to create the anchor point, then click and drag again to create a curve. Without closing the contour, add one more last anchor point so that it does not intersect with any part of the contour, but is a little further from it. A little bit later we will edit the outline.
Choose a tool Arrow (Direct Selection Tool) and clicking on the reference point, move the point to the desired position, or moving the reference point guides, move them, changing the orientation of the curve to make it wider or narrower.
Choose a tool Eraser (Eraser Tool) and open the brush palette Window – Brush (Window – Brush). Choose a hard round brush with a size of 45 pixels and set Intervals (Spacing) 186%.
In the tab Form Dynamics (Shape Dynamics) set the value Size fluctuations (Size Jitter) by 35%.
Choose a tool Arrow (Direct Selection Tool) again, then right-click on the work path and select the function Perform a stroke (Stroke Path).
Choose a tool Eraser(Eraser Tool) in the dialog that appears and make sure that the option Simulate pressure (Simulate Pressure) is disabled.
After that, points of different sizes on the layer with rasterized text will be deleted. If you do not like the way the holes were laid, then cancel this action and redo it. If necessary, change the brush size until you like the result. After that, press the key Enter in order to hide the outline.
Now go to the menu Editing – Transform – Rotate (Edit – Transform – Rotate) and slightly rotate the layer with the rasterized text. Press key Enter in order to apply the changes. If you wish, you can also rotate the original text layer.
Double click on the original text layer to open the style window and apply some of them. Select Gradient overlay (Gradient Overlay (and set the blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply), Opacity (Opacity) 25%, Style (Style) Mirror (Reflected) and Scale (Scale) 150%. Then click in the gradient box to create it.
Create a gradient. For the left marker set coloracacac and Opacity (Opacity) 0%, and for the right marker also set the color #acacac but Opacity (Opacity) at 100%. To do this, you need to click on the corresponding markers below and above the gradient bars and enter numerical values in their fields at the bottom of the window.
Now apply the layer style Pattern overlay (Pattern Overlay). Set the blending mode to Multiplication (Multiply) and select Pattern Cardboard.
Now apply a layer style. Shadow (Drop Shadow). Decrease Opacity (Opacity) 20%, Bias (Distance) up to 12 pixels and set The size (Size) 2 pixels.
These will give the text some 3D effect.
Double click on the layer with the rasterized text to open the layer style window. Apply layer style Shadow (Drop Shadow). The settings are below in the screenshot.
Result at the moment after applying the style.
Create a new layer on top of all layers and name it Pins.
Double click on a new layer and apply a layer style. Stamping (Bevel and Emboss). Put the Depth (Depth) by 450%, The size (Size) 15 pixels, check the box Smoothing (Anti-aliased). In the window Backlight mode (Highlight) set the blending mode Linear light (Linear Light).
In settings Contour (Contour) also tick the option Smoothing (Anti-aliased).
Now apply a layer style. Shadow (Drop Shadow). Decrease Opacity (Opacity) 54%, Bias (Distance) up to 14 pixels and set The size (Size) 3 pixels.
Activate the tool Brush (Brush Too), set its size to 40 pixels (depending on what size you want to create a pin) and set the foreground color to # acacac. Then click the mouse once at the top of the letter to create a pin.
Now, you need to repeat all the same steps to create the remaining letters. The color values used for the letters in the lesson are pink. # ff8e94, green # 82ca89, Orange # ff933c and purple # 8560a8.
When finished with letters, group all the layers except the background one by clicking on the top one and holding the Shift key while clicking on the last one. Then go to menu Layers – Group Layers (Layer – Group Layers).
Duplicate the group, then go to the menu Layers – Merge Layers (Layer – Merge Group).
Now go to the menu Filter – Rendering – Effects lighting (Filter – Render Lighting Effects). Select lighting effect Directed (Spot) and set the color # f3edd3, Intensity (Intensity) to 22, Centre illumination (Hotspot) to -8, Toning (Colorize) color # fffec6, Exposition (Exposure) 30, Gloss (Gloss) -77, Metal (Metallic) -85.
Then click and drag the white circle lighting settings to resize it, or click and drag it to any empty area to apply your position until you get a result similar to the one below.
Now click on the icon for creating a correction layer at the bottom of the layers palette and select Curves (Curves).
Select points and change their input and output values as shown below.
Click to add a point in the middle of the curve, and then change its input and output values, as shown in the screenshot below.
Now select the blue channel from the drop-down menu at the top of the panel and drag both points upwards.
Decrease Opacity (Opacity) adjustment layer Curves (Curves) up to 40%.
Click on the icon for creating the adjustment layer at the bottom of the layers palette again and select the adjustment layer Colour (Solid Color).
Set color # ffcf68.
Set this layer overlay mode. Multiplication (Multiply) and reduce Opacity (Opacity) up to 30%.
Click the button to create a correction layer last time and select Levels (Levels), and then change the blend mode of this layer to Soft light (Soft Light).
Select the blue channel from the drop-down menu and change the values of the highlights to 243.
And everything is ready!
Below is the final result. In the future, you can use a very simple, but very useful method of use. Pen (Pen Tool) to create contours, and then edit them with an eraser and brush.
I hope you enjoyed the tutorial and found it useful.
