Playing text on grass in Photoshop

Final result

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a football text effect using basic layer styles and a couple of textures. Let’s start!

In the lesson were used such materials.

1. Create a background

Step 1

Create a new document size 1000 x 1000 px, install it resolution on 300.

Set the base color to # d9d9d9 and background color on # 818181. Choose a tool Gradient, set the fillFrom main to background“(Foreground to Background gradient fill) and click on the icon radial gradient (Radial Gradient).

After that, click a little below the upper right corner and drag the mouse to the lower left corner to create a background gradient, then duplicate the background layer using Ctrl + J.

Step 2

Double click on the copy of the background layer, apply the effect. Pattern overlay (Pattern Overlay), change Blend mode (Blend Mode) on Multiplication (Multiply), Opacity (Opacity) on 70% and set the pattern with white texture.

Step 3

This will add a subtle texture to the background.

2. Create and decorate text.

Step 1

Create text using the font. Lobster 1.3, Colour # 3f3f3f and size 70 pt.

Step 2

Duplicate the text layer using Ctrl + J. To the new copy, apply the styles listed below.

Step 3: Emboss (Bevel and Emboss)

The size (Size): 3
Check mark Smoothing (Anti-Aliased) must be installed.

Step 4: Contour

Circuit: Semicircle (Half Round)
Check mark Smoothing (Anti-Aliased) must be installed.

Step 5: Drop Shadow

Bias (Distance): one
The size (Size): one

Step 6

We get this result.

3. Convert text to shape and change its parameters.

Step 1

Select the layer with the original text and select Font> Convert to curves (Type> Convert to Shape). Also the team may be called Font> Convert to shape.

Step 2

On options panels (Options bar) find the button Contour operations (Path opeartions), then click on Combine shape components (Merge Shape Components). This will simplify the application of effects in the future.

Step 3

Choose a tool Outline selection (Direct Selection Tool) and on options panels (Options bar) install stroke color (Stroke color) on # e0e1e3, the size (Size) on 3, then click on Stroke options (Stroke Options) and install Alignment on Outside (Align> Outside).

Step 4

Duplicate the shape layer and place it above the text layer. Go to Layers> Shred> Figure (Layer> Rasterize> Shape), change the setting Fillings (Fill) on 0.

Step 5

Duplicate the shape layer again, drag the copy under the original and change the color. Fillings (Fill) and Stroke (Stroke) on # 000000.

Step 6

Rename the copy of the layer to Shadow text, go to Layers> Shred> Figure (Layer> Rasterize> Shape) and make the layer invisible by clicking on the eye icon next to it.

4. We make a layer with the outer stroke of the form

Double click on the original shape layer (the one above the Shadow text layer) and apply these styles.

Step 1: Emboss (Bevel and Emboss)

Check mark Smoothing (Anti-Aliased) must be installed.
Shadow Mode> Opacity (Shadow Mode> Opacity): 35%

Step 2: Contour

Check mark Smoothing (Anti-Aliased) must be installed.

Step 3: Drop Shadow

Shadow (Drop Shadow) applies if you do not want to add grass below the text. However, if you want to add it, simply uncheck the shadow effect for a more realistic result. Opacity (Opacity): 35%

Step 4

This is the result we get.

5. We make leather texture over text

Double click on the rasterized layer (above the text layer) and apply such effects.

Step 1: Emboss (Bevel and Emboss)

The size (Size): one
Check mark Smoothing (Anti-Aliased) must be installed.
Backlight mode (Highlight Mode): Linear light (Linear Light)
Opacity (Opacity): 100%
Shadow Mode> Opacity (Shadow Mode> Opacity): 35%

Step 2: Contour

Check mark Smoothing (Anti-Aliased) must be installed.

Step 3: Texture

Pattern (Pattern): White texture
Scale (Scale): 25%

Step 4

These steps will make the top layer and give the text the effect of the skin.

6. Create a basic grass rectangle.

Step 1

Choose a tool Rectangle (Rectangle Tool) and create a white rectangle behind the text (under the Shadow text layer).

Step 2

Choose a tool Outline selection (Direct Selection Tool) and drag the top two corners of the rectangle.

Step 3

Go to Editing> Contour Transform> Perspective (Edit> Transform Points> Perspective) and drag the bottom edge of the rectangle to the left. Button Alt allows you to drag the other side. This will create the illusion of a 3D perspective. When you’re done, click Enter, to confirm the changes.

7. Add grass texture

Step 1

Place the downloaded grass image above the white rectangle layer, then go to the menu Editing> Contour Transform> Perspective (Edit> Transform Points> Perspective), click and drag one of the top corners to move them inside, then click on the button Enter.

Step 2

Right click on the grass texture layer and select Create clipping mask (Create Clipping Mask). You can use the tool Move (Move Tool) to position the texture as desired.

Scattering (Scattering)

Color dynamics (Color Dynamics)

Broadcast (Transfer)

8. We ruffle the grass

Step 1

Use the tool Outline selection (Direct Selection Tool) to select the control points of the rectangle with grass, then go to the menu Editing> Copy (Edit> Copy).

Step 2

Step 7

Press the button Delete, to delete the selected part, then go to the menu Select> Unselect All (Select> Deselect). This will help blend the grass contour with the texture itself.

Step 8

Choose a tool Clarifier (Dodge Tool) and on options panels (Options bar) select Soft round brush (Soft round brush) by size65 px and stiffness (Strenght) 50%, set Range on Mid tones (Range> Mildtones).

After that, start to lighten the contour in those places where it contacts with the light areas of the texture. This will help make the image even more natural.

Step 1

Choose a tool Rectangle (Rectangle Tool) and create another white rectangle under the grass. Using the same tools as in the previous steps, select the bottom two points and transform them inwards.

Step 2

Place the texture of the earthen cliff (SoilCliff0027_1_S) over the small rectangle, but make sure that there is some grass above.

Step 3

Holding down the button Ctrl, click on the thumbnail of the layer with a small rectangle to create a selection, then click Ctrl + J, to duplicate this layer. Remove the original earthen rock texture layer.

Step 4

Step 7

Remember to remove the shadow effect for the exterior hatching (step 4.3).

Done!

In this tutorial, you learned how to create football-style text using a few simple Photoshop techniques and tools. We started with a simple text, then added some effects to it, grass, and at the end gave an even more realistic look. I hope you have learned something new and will be able to apply these techniques in your further work.
