Thorns and roses in Photoshop

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create beautiful floral text from roses. For work, we will use layer styles, textures and a PNG image of a rose. As a result, we get a beautiful festive text. You will be able to complement it, decorate or change your mood and need. The only limit is your imagination! I hope this text will be a good addition to many of your creative works or add a zest to the greeting card!

Step 1

Our first step is to create a background. For this job I use a seamless cardboard texture. It will be great to combine with the text. Download textures “Cardboard” from the proposed materials and open in Photoshop any one of them you like.

On a new layer, above the layer with the texture of cardboard, add a label using the Label brushes. Double-click on the label layer and go to Layer style (Layer style). Add parameters Shadow (Drop Shadow) and Inner shadow (Inner Shadow). Detailed settings for Layer style (Layer style) you can see in the lesson PSD file.

Translator’s Note: if you have problems downloading the PSD file attached to the lesson, then you can use my settings (working canvas size 2000×1340):

Shadow:
mode – “Multiplication” – opacity 60%;
angle: 103 (uncheck “global illumination”)
offset: 17
span: 2
size: 10

Inner shadow:
mode – “Screen” – white color – opacity 70%
angle: 111
offset: 10
tightening: 0
size: 8

Also, you can add to the label the texture of the old paper, to give it a vintage look.

Step 2

Now we will write the text. Download and install the font. A yummy apology “. Create a new layer on top of all the others. Activate the tool Horizontal text (Horizontal Type Tool) (size about 260 pt). Create an inscription in any color. Name the text layer “Rose Text”.

Step 3

To make the text look like a stem, we’ll add the following Layer styles (Layer style): Shadow (Drop Shadow), Inner shadow (Inner Shadow), Internal glow (Inner Glow) and Color overlay (Color Overlay).

Duplicate the “Rose Text” layer. Clear layer style. Fill (Fill) Layer-copy set to 0% Add a Inner shadow (Inner Shadow).

Step 4

Create a new layer above all the previous ones. Name the layer “Texture”. Fill it with white. Set the foreground color to white and the background color to black. Apply filter Fibers (Fibers filter) with the following settings:

Standing on the “Texture” layer, create a text selection (CTRL + click on the icon of the text layer). Next, click on the icon “Add vector mask“(Layer Mask) at the bottom of the panel.

Set the blending mode (in the next mod) of the “Texture” layer to Soft light (Soft Light) and lower the opacity to 30%.

Step 5

Add thorns to the text stalk. Create a new layer and rename it to “Rose Thorns”. Standing on the new layer, select “Rose Text” again and create a selection (press Ctrl + click on the layer icon). Form a text outline – right-click on the selection and select “Form a work path“(Make Work Path). Tolerance (Expandthe) install 2px.

Install the brush “Thorns Brush” (it is attached to the lesson in the PSD file). Select the foreground color (foreground color) #515009.

Activate the tool Select contour elements (Path Selection) and right click on the outline. From the list, select “Outline the contour“(Stroke Path).

You may need to use a tool Eraser (Eraser Tool) to remove excess spines. You can also add soft shadows to the spikes to make them look more realistic. You should get something like this:

Step 6

Use the image “Rose” and decorate your text. You can experiment using different parts of the flower (leaves, buds, stems). When you finish decorating the text, you may need to adjust the colors using adjustment layers. I use for this correctionBrightness \ Contrast“(Brightness / Contrast).

In addition, I added some layer styles that can be found in the PSD file. Now my text looks like this:

Step 7

Add the final touches. Open the texture of old paper and add it to your work on top of all other layers. Set the blend mode of this layer to Multiplication (Multiply), opacity thirty% Add adjustment layer Yakoy \ Contrast (Brightness / Contrast), set the settings as shown below:
