The final image that we will create:
In this little tutorial, you will learn how to create glass text using layer styles in Photoshop. Let’s start!
Materials used
Step 1 – Preparing materials and creating a document
Create a new PSD document, 600 x 400 pixels in RGB mode with a resolution of 72 dots per inch with a white background. Now we will prepare our materials. Install the TheNautiGal font on your computer and, if necessary, open the .PAT file to create the background or use the ready background image to not create the background. You can skip the background creation and go directly to step 3 of this lesson.
Step 2 – Creating the Background
Let’s go at Menu> Layer> Layer Styles> Blending Options (Menu> Layer> Layer Style> Blend Options) and use the settings below. You can also access the blending options in two faster ways. The first and fastest way is to double-click on a layer in the layers menu.
Another way: Right-click on a layer in the layers menu and select Blending Modes. When you are done with all the settings below, do not forget to click “OK” in the overlay settings window! If you have downloaded file templates, use template No. 31. You can also leave the background without a texture overlay or use any other texture that is suitable for a light background.
Inner shadow: Blend mode – Linear dimmer, color # 171718, opacity 34%, angle -90, use global illumination, 96 pixel offset, 30% offset, 250 pixel size, 8% noise.
Internal luminescence: Blend mode: Brightening base, opacity 19%, noise 0%, color #ffffff, soft method, source – from the center, 24%, size 250 pixels., Range 50%, fluctuation 0%.
Gradient overlay: Blend mode – Multiplication, opacity 100%, from # 80b2a7 to # c7c8a2, style – radial, tick “align by layer”, angle 0, scale 74%.
Pattern Overlay: Blend mode – Normal, 100% opacity, use a texture from the set of 72 Subtle Web Patterns, scale 100%.
Step 3 – Start creating the first text layer.
Now we can start making our text effect. First select the text tool and change the font to TheNautiGal, about 255 points in size and the smoothing method is sharp. Now enter text somewhere in the center of the image. You can write any word, but in this lesson we will use the word “Wow”.
Step 4
This first text layer will be located below all text layers. We go to Menu> Layer> Layer Styles> Blending Options (Menu> Layer> Layer Style> Blend Options) and use the settings below for our text.
Set the opacity of the fill to 0%.
Shadow: Blend mode – Linear dimmer, color # 171718, opacity 19%, angle – 52, uncheck “use global illumination”, 11 pixel offset, 0% contraction, 16 pixel size, 0% noise.
Stamping: Style-internal bevel, method-smooth, depth 83%, direction – up, size 3 pixels., Softening 0 pixels., Angle 0, remove the tick from “use global illumination”, height 26, tick on “smoothing”, backlight mode – linear clarifier, color #ffffff, opacity 28%, shadow mode – linear dimmer, color # 000000, opacity 0%.
Step 5 – Creating and Configuring a 2nd Layer with Text
Now duplicate the text layer. Select the text layer and go Menu> Layer> Duplicate layer (Menu> Layer> Duplicate Layer) and name it whatever you want. Now go Menu> Layer> Layer Style> Clear Layer Style (Menu> Layer> Layer Style> Clear Layer Style), as we will apply a different style for this layer. Finally go to Menu> Layer> Layer Style> Blending Options (Menu> Layer> Layer Style> Overlay Settings) and use the settings below for your text.
Again, you can use quick access to the blending options from step 2 of this lesson. When you are done with all the settings below, do not forget to click “OK” in the overlay settings window! This text layer will be in the middle of all layers. So now it should be located above the first layer with the text.
Set the fill opacity to 0%.
Inner shadow: Blend mode – Linear dimmer, color # 171718, opacity 24%, angle 180, uncheck “use global illumination”, offset 1 pix., Whipping 0%, size 0 pix., Noise 0%.
Stamping: Style-internal bevel, method-smooth, depth 1000%, direction – up, size 4 pixels., Softening 1 pix., Angle 0, remove the tick from “use global illumination”, height 26, tick on “smoothing”, backlight mode -brightening basics, color #ffffff, opacity 4%, shadow mode – linear dimmer, color # 000000, opacity 10%.
Step 6
Create and configure the last 3rd layer with text. We are almost there. Now we need to duplicate our 2nd text layer.
This is the main text layer and it should be located above all other text layers.
Set the opacity of the fill to 0%.
Shadow: Blend mode – Multiplication, color # 171718, opacity 82%, angle -0, uncheck “use global illumination”, 2 pixel offset, 0% offset, 8 pixel size, 0% noise.
Inner shadow: Blend mode – Linear brightener, color #ffffff, opacity 22%, angle – 90, uncheck “use global illumination”, offset 1 pixel. .
Stamping: Style – inner bevel, method-smooth, depth 1000%, direction – up, size 16 pixels., Softening 0 pixels., Angle 0, remove the tick from “use global illumination”, height 40, tick on “smoothing”, backlight mode – linear clarifier, color #ffffff, opacity 18%, shadow mode – linear dimmer, color # 000000, opacity 8%.
Stroke: Size 1 pix., Position – inside, blend-overlap mode, opacity 27%, stroke type – color, color # 999999.
