Volcanic text effect in Photoshop

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a burning text effect.

Final result:

For the lesson we will need several additional materials:

Step 1. Create a new document with a size of 800×1100 pixels, fill the background with black. Use the Mist brushes to draw fog on the background layer (lower the opacity and brush pressure to about 40%):

Then create a new layer, use the Cloud brush to draw the clouds, then compress (CTRL + T) them:

On the same layer we draw more clouds so that they are, as it were, a continuation of the previous one:

Step 2. Use the downloaded font to write the letter in the center of the canvas:

Load the image of the rock in Photoshop, use Quick selection tool (Fast selection) (W) with the following parameters to select part of the texture:

Copy (CTRL + C) and paste (CTRL + V) the selected part onto the working document, slightly trim the edges with soft eraser (E) and place it on the letter as shown below:

Repeat these manipulations and cut out more details, copy and paste them on the image until we cover the entire surface of the letter:

Hide the letter layer and get the following result:

To add more depth to the image, use black. brush (B) and draw some shadows under the letter:

Step 3. Load the image with fire in Photoshop, use Lasso Tool (Lasso) (L) with Feather (Feather) 50 pixels to highlight part of the texture:

Copy and paste the selected area on the image, place it in the upper part of the letter, adjust the size (CTRL + T) (also change the blending mode of the “fiery” layer to Screen (Lightening):

Use soft eraser , to trim the edges a bit:

Duplicate (CTRL + J) the fire layer, adjust the size of the copy and rotate it as shown below:

Create two more duplicate layers, adjust the size and rotate them to create a splash effect:

Step 4. Now let’s create two adjustment layers:

Levels (Levels)

Edit the adjustment layer mask:

Curves (Curves)

Edit the adjustment layer mask:

As you can see, the fiery effect looks richer and brighter after adding adjustment layers:

Step 5. We are almost done! Add another adjustment layer Color balance (Color balance):

After that we merge all the layers into one and apply the filter Filter – Sharpen – Smart Sharpen (Filter – Sharpness – Smart Sharpness) (this details a little fire and stone):

And here is the final version:
