Wood carving

Today we will study wood carving.

Materials for the lesson:

We will need textures of rusty metal and a tree trunk, which can be found on any portals with free images.
Now all that we need is already at hand and you can start.

Step 1 – Background Settings:
Create a document of size 750×550 pix and transfer the texture to the new document. Overlay lighting Filter – Render – Lighting Effects (Filter – Rendering – Lighting Effects). Use the settings as shown below.

Step 2 – Color Correction:
Create a new adjustment layer, to do this, in the layers palette, click on “Create new fill or adjustment layer » (Create a new adjustment layer or a fill layer) and select Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation). Settings: Hue (Color tone) 0, Saturation(Saturation) -75, Lightness(Brightness) 0. Create another adjustment layer. Levels (Levels) settings: 0, 0.60, 255.

Step 3 – Position your text:
The author used a font called Stencil. It can be found and downloaded at Dafont. Write the text and place it in the middle of the document. Do not use small fonts, as we will use embossing later.

Step 4 – Use the texture:
Place the wood texture on top of the number “10”. Then click Ctrl + left click on the text layer to load the selection. Create layer mask with wood texture, to do this, at the bottom of the layers palette, click on “Add vector mask.”

Step 5 – Use the texture:
Actions are similar to the previous step. Reduce the texture and also impose it on the text “Steps.SG”. Ctrl + left click on the text layer, create a vector mask for the texture layer.

Step 6 – Emboss:
Right-click on the layer with the text “10” and select Blending options (Overlay options). Select Bevel and Emboss (Embossed) and adjust as shown. Color for Backlight mode use # CEBE80, for shadow mode # 000000.

Step 7 – Emboss:
Select Inner glow (Inner Glow), the settings are shown below. Right-click on the layer with the text “10” and click on Copy Layer Style (Copy layer style). Then right-click on the layer with the text “Steps.SG” and select Paste Layer Style (Paste the layer style). Color for blending mode use # 2E2E00.

Step 8 – Emboss:
Change Blending mode (Blend Mode) layer with the text “Photoshop Tutorials” on Soft light (Soft light). You should have something similar to the example below.

Step 9 – Create a Stroke:
Create a new layer below all the text layers. Select the layers “10” and “Steps.SG”, to do this, hold down the buttons Ctrl and Shift and click on the layer thumbnails in the layers panel, then expand the selection Select – Modify – Expand (Allocation – Modification – Expand) on 6 pix Fill the selection with white. This will give us a white frame around our text.

Step 10 – Emboss for the frame:
Right-click on the frame layer and select Blending options (Overlay options). Select Bevel and Emboss (Emboss), apply the settings below. Color for Backlight mode use # DBC09C, for shadow mode # 000000.

Step 11 – Emboss for the frame:
Select Inner glow (Internal glow) and adjust as shown in the picture below. For blending mode, use black. Finally, change this layer for this layer. Blend mode (Blend Mode) on Soft light (Soft light).

The author added an image of the skull, but it is his right to choose, you can leave everything without adding extraneous pictures. We hope that you liked the technique. Here you can see the image in its true size.
