In many parts of the world, designers and illustrators are already preparing for the upcoming Halloween and paint the most incredible work. In this lesson, I will show you how to create a cute and at the same time terrible childish illustration.

Final result:

Part 1. Before you begin

Before starting to create an illustration, I would like to talk about what tools and techniques I will use. When working with this illustration, I will use a standard round brush, which does not need to be installed specifically, it is in Photoshop by default. For the brush I will use the following settings:

  1. Brush shape (Brush Tip Shape) You can choose from the brush settings window, here choose the size (size), hardness (hardness) or scatter (spacing). Scatter by 0.
  2. In the form dynamics parameter (Shape Dynamics) Enable Pen Pressure (Pen Pressure)
  3. Also include the parameter transfer in order to control the flow of paint while pressing the pen
  4. You can combine all these parameters together with opacity to get the desired result, be it exact lines or soft color transitions.

The following screenshot shows how the light and shadow will look like during the drawing process.

Part 2. Create a new document.

Step 1

Create a new document. (File – New / (File> New) (CTRL + N). In the parameter Presets (Preset) select international type papers (International paper). The remaining values set as in the screenshot.

Part 3. Create a sketch.

Step 1

Create a new layer. (Shift + CTRL + N) and start sketching. When drawing, use as many layers as necessary. When the sketch is ready, merge all the layers into one layer (Ctrl + E).

Step 2

Under the sketch layer add two new layers (Shift + Ctrl + N). Fill one with gray with the tool Fill (Paint Bucket) (G), and fill the second radial gradient (Radial Gradient Tool) (G).

Step 1

Paint each element of the sketch on a separate layer. Legs and horns can be painted once, borrow a duplicate layer (Ctrl + J) and flip horizontally (CTRL + T) (Editing – Transforming – Flip Horizontally).

Step 2

Draw water below and draw the moon using the tool. Ellipse (Ellipse Tool) (U).

Step 3

Add a dark gradient under the water.

Step 4

Round tight brush (AT) draw clouds and add a light gray gradient to the water layer.

Step 5

Draw a shadow under the girl’s feet. Walk through the shadows eraser (Eraser Tool) (E) to soften it a little.

Part 5. We draw the girl

Step 1

Create a base shadow using gray to draw the skin, and change the blend mode of this layer to Multiplication (Multiply). Add a clipping mask to this layer (while pressing the Alt click between both layers).

Draw a face. You can draw half of the face, then duplicate the layers, merge them and flip horizontally. At this stage you need to create volume.

Step 3

Now go to drawing clothes. On the dress draw folds. When you draw on a layer with a clipping mask, you will see that on the base layer some small areas may not be painted over. Fix it.

Step 4

Go to drawing feet. Do not forget that the shadows can be softened with the tool Eraser (Eraser Tool).

Step 5

Start drawing hands and ornament on the collar.

If you have not done this before, now add a layer below and draw black hair.

Step 7

To draw strands of hair, use light and dark shades of gray. You can use a brush with hard edges, and then soften them with a soft brush.

Step 8

Now draw a little creature. Do not forget the volume, the details will be drawn later.

Step 9

Add a shadow to the horns. Use the tool Finger (Smudge Tool) with hard edges, with a small brush size to work on the horns at the base.

Step 10

In order to draw the hair on the head of a small creature, select all the layers (with the key pressed Shift click on the desired layers), duplicate them (Ctrl + J) and merge (Ctrl + E).

Tool Finger (Smudge Tool) draw each strand, as shown in the screenshot. In the final, draw a shadow under the hair.

Step 11

Add a new layer (Shift + Ctrl + N) over all layers and draw strands of hair on the girl’s forehead and behind the head.

Step 12

Start drawing the details on the little creature.

Step 13

Create a pattern on the dress using blending modes Multiplication (Multiply) or Overlap (Overlay) (depending on the shade of gray). You can draw lines, dots, flowers or any other pattern, but keep in mind that the pattern should follow the shape of the fabric.

Step 14

Start drawing boots.

Step 15

Draw a piece of dress behind the girl.

Step 16

Go back to the little creature, paint the details of the eye and add light highlights. Also, add a hard shadow to the hand of the girl with which she holds the creature.

Step 17

Draw on the features of the girl, add light spots to enhance the sense of volume. Smooth out color transitions that look coarse.

Step 1

Draw concentric waves around the girl, then add a new layer (Shift + Ctrl + N) in blending mode Multiplication (Multiply) and draw random stripes in various shades of gray.

Step 2

Select all layers with legs, duplicate them (Ctrl + J) and merge (Ctrl + E). Flip the resulting layer vertically (Editing – Transforming – Flip Vertically) (Ctrl + T) – it will be the shadow of the legs, falling on the water, and with the help of the command Levels (Levels) (CTRL + L) make the legs darker. Eraser (Eraser Tool) soften the shadow of the legs.

Step 3

Select all the layers with dark stripes and merge them (Ctrl + E) and place them on top. Duplicate this layer (Ctrl + J) and place it over it. Merge both layers (Ctrl + E) and draw a gradient from the top of the document to the bottom with the tool Eraser (Eraser Tool).

Merge layers with circles (Ctrl + E) and draw a dark gradient from top to bottom. The shadow under the girl’s legs is over.

Step 4

Use a large round brush to draw clouds.

This screenshot shows the drawn Moon, but I will delete it later. Double click on the layer and add layer style Inner Glow:

Step 6

Draw a white triangle on the water and distort it with a tool Finger (Smudge Tool). Then, soften the resulting glow. eraser (Eraser Tool). Also, add a white gradient to the surface of the water.

Step 7

Strengthen the shadows and highlights on the girl using layers with blending modes Multiplication (Multiply) or Overlap (Overlay). Shadows and glare paint with a soft brush.

Step 8

Finish drawing the details on the eye of the little creature, and also add light highlights to the horns.

Step 9

Draw a ribbon in the girl’s hair and draw a bow on it.

Step 10

Blur the horizon line on the water tool Blur (Blur Tool).

Step 1

Go to menu (Image – Color Mode – RGB) (Image> Mode> RGB Color). Put all the layers in a group (Ctrl + G), and also create a new group at the top to add color.

Add a new layer in blend mode Chromaticity (Color) and draw a linear gradient from blue to purple. Reduce the opacity as shown in the screenshot:

Step 4

Draw each part on a separate layer in the blending mode. Chromaticity (Color). Select each part and paint over it. With this method of coloring is very easy to change color if necessary.

Step 5

Add color shadows by painting them on separate layers in blend mode Multiplication (multiply). Then greatly reduce the opacity of these layers. For example, in my case, I used magenta and yellow shades for the shadows around the eyes, pink for blush, nose and hands.

Step 6

For the shadows, use the same colors or darker shades, drawing on separate layers in the blend mode Multiplication (multiply) with low opacity.

To create light highlights, use light shades, and then change the blend modes of these layers to Overlap (Overlay), Soft light (Soft Light) or others.

Step 7

It is necessary to strengthen the light-shadow volume on the face, for this, draw a soft shadow. Also, add yellow and purple hues to the ends of the hair and horns so that they do not look flat.

Step 8

Go back to the background layer and add a red gradient to it, change the layer blending mode with gradient to Overlap (Overlay), and then lower the opacity.

Step 9

Change the color of the bow on the girl’s head. Just duplicate the layer. (Ctrl + J) and apply the command Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation) (CTRL + U).

Step 10

Add a bit of light to your eyelashes to make them look more natural. Do the same with hair.

Step 11

Also add a highlight to the boots and do not forget to draw the details. Duplicate the layers with the legs (Ctrl + J) and merge all these layers (Ctrl + E), and then change the color with the command Hue / Saturation (Hue / Saturation).

Step 12

Draw a belt with a bow on the waist of the girl:

Step 1

Add adjustment layer Photo filter (Adjustment Layer – Photo Filter) (Adjustment Layer> Photo Filter) with the values as in the screenshot.

Step 2

Add color to the clouds. I painted them in pink and yellow. Also, create a color reflection from them on the water.

Step 3

If desired, you can change the girl’s hair color. Also, if necessary, you can change the color of other image details.
I changed the color of the gradient in the background:

Step 4

Draw striped branches that float in the water. Do not forget to add to them the shadow and reflection from them on the water.
