We draw a witch in Photoshop – Part I

In this lesson, we will draw the Witch from the fairy tale “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” in Photoshop. Let’s get started.

Texture 1
Set of brushes

STEP one

Let’s create a new document, let’s go File – New (File> New), or press Ctrl + N.

In the window Set (Preset), select the option International Paper Size (International Paper), and in line The size (Size) A4.

So we created a new document.

Let’s choose an average shade for the background, in order to make it easy to work with light and shadows. I liked the chocolate shade.

Next, apply the tool Fill (fill).

STEP 2

First you need to draw the figure of a witch. To do this, select the tool Pencil (pencil tool).

Set round hard pencil, 100% opacity, Interval (spacing) 1%. Apply option Other dynamics (Transfer) and install Transparency scatter (opacity jitter) on Pen pressure (pen pressure).

So, press the key (D) to set the main color to black, imagine where the witch’s head will be and in this place put a big black dot, this will be the beginning of the silhouette.

Next, continue to draw the shape, as shown in the screenshot below.

We got the base for the body and head.

To create a face, draw a shape like in the screenshot below using the tool Brush (brush tool).

Next, draw with a brush, as shown in the screenshot below.

STEP 3

So now we will create face shapes. Using a transparent brush, draw a shape as shown in the screenshot below.

Next, leave a space between the midpoint of the oval and the lower point of the oval and draw a beautiful nose.

When you draw the shape of the cheek, do not forget that the shape of the cheek is drawn below the eyes.

Same for the chin and jaw, just try to recreate in your head the image of an old woman and imagine them sagging.

STEP 4

It’s time to add facial features. It is very easy to start with the details of the facial features, if you can imagine them in your imagination, it is therefore easiest to start drawing basic facial features. The very first principle is to get to the picture, to feel it, try to feel what you want to draw at this moment. Feel sad, feel sad if you want to paint sadness or get angry if you want to portray anger and rage. Thus, visual memories related to non-verbal communication and expressiveness will pop up in your mind.

At this stage, we will continue to use the same pencil tool (about 85% of the work was done by this tool). Set the size to 10, make sure that the skin tone is set as the background color and black as the main color.

Use black color within the contour of the head, and the color shade of the skin outside the contour of the head, if you draw hair. To switch the foreground color to the background color, use the (X) key. First we will draw the hair hanging from the head. Repeat the direction of the red arrows.

Next, let’s focus on the nose.

Lateral wrinkles in the mouth – it is very important to show that the woman is old and the skin on her face has sagged, add more expressiveness.

To create a witch’s mouth, we need a toothless mouth with no lips, which will convey the feeling that there is nothing besides skin. Having one tooth or two can add visual stress and additional details. Do not worry, if something does not come out right now, you will fix it later.

Set the brush size to 50 px. and press the (x) key to switch back to the skin color, and then draw the “V” symbol, slightly angled, over the witch’s eyebrows, as shown in the screenshot below, to show the muscles of the face and give more tension to the expressiveness. Also, using a 100px brush, draw a soft line over the nose.

Using tool Pipette (eye dropper tool), select a background color tone pattern. Then, select the tool Pencil (pencil tool), size 100, draw a spot in the eye area to create a pupil.

STEP five

Next, let’s work on her hand. Set the brush size to 600 px and with a brush, draw a spot where you see an apple.

Using the same color cast that you used for the skin tone, sketch the drawing of the witch’s hand.

STEP 6

Now, we will work a little on the facial features. We will start with the eyes. Select the pencil tool and vary the size between 5 px. and 35 px. We create small lines to express expression, more lines for mid-tones and for light highlights.

Continue to draw wrinkles, as shown in the screenshot below.

Next, work on the brow.

Now, work on your nose.

Add wrinkles in the mouth area. Draw a black lip base in black to create a baseline for wrinkles near the mouth. Also, draw the cheekbones.

Repeat the same steps only on the chin.

Next, add parts to the jaw.

Now, start creating a skeleton for the face by creating base lines for the witch’s hair.

Next, add horizontal lines as shown below, creating wrinkles on the forehead.

So let’s work on the eyes. To emphasize the witch’s eyes a little, I dotted the pupils with the background color to darken them a little. Next, I created a triple illumination effect with three different light sources. As a result, you can see the reflection of a skull in its pupils, we do this to add a bit of symbolism to our work.

STEP 7

Not all parts of the body have the same color. Now, we will carefully draw the different areas, and give them a little color. Do it very carefully. We use the blending mode. Normal (normal). Blend mode Chromaticity (color) do not apply.

Continue adding colors as shown in the screenshot below.

To complete this step, simply add a bit of discolored pure blue to the face boundaries.

STEP 8 – Don’t forget your hand

The balance in the picture is very important, the success of your work will depend on it. In this picture, there are two focal points, namely, the eyes and the hand with the apple. As we add details, it is very important that the sketch is updated at the level of all other parts of the face. Add parts to your hand and fingers. You can also put a black dot in the upper part of the apple, so that it looks more like an apple, and less like a ball.

STEP 9

Create a new layer and use the texture brush to add some details to the cape.

Use the direction of the lines to draw the folds on the raincoat.

Next, with the tool Pipette (eye dropper tool), select the darkest and lightest skin tones to draw light and dark hairs. Randomly change the size and color.

Try to draw them so that they look as natural as possible, following the directions of the arrows in the screenshot below. A good tip is to draw some curls of hair on top of other curls, so that they look like strands of hair.

Next, set the brush size between 30 and 15 (as you prefer), gently draw “shadows on the skin“, using a translucent brush, repeat the motion with the brush, as shown in the screenshot below, to create a feeling of shadow from the hair on the face.

Go back to the body using the tool Pipette (eyedropper tool (I), once again take a sample of the background color and repeating the movement of the arrows in the screenshot below, create shoulders.

Create a new layer using the color tint we used earlier to create the “shadows on the face”, paint the chest area as shown in the screenshot below.

Try to imagine where the borders of the cloak and long hair (which we will draw later) will pass in the chest, you can see the borders approximately in the screenshot below.

Change the direction of the brush to create a basis for future folds of clothing, change the size of the brush as many times as you need to feel comfortable. Approximately, I painted like this.

STEP 10

So, we have the base of the face, now we will try to add some details so that the witch on the left will look like the one on the right.

Blue areas indicate light highlights.

Red areas indicate shadows.

The screenshot below shows where the shadows and light highlights.

Feel free to add the warts, as in the screenshot below. To draw them – just put the dark specks on the witch’s face, and then paint these over the specks with a light skin tone.

The tedious part of this work is all the same … “INFINITE WRINKLES”. Now, we need to add more details to the sketches we created earlier. The technique is always the same, use the color shades that you used earlier, you know, light and dark skin tones, the time has come to once again work on light and shade, but in small areas, not on the main ones.

Let’s start at the top, draw a few large horizontal lines from left to right between the hair strands, as shown in the screenshot below, while leaving space between the horizontal wrinkles, then draw some small diagonal curved lines, the lines should be softer and should be applied more carefully, use the color shade of the dark area of the skin, separating them with light shades from the light areas of the skin.

These wrinkles are very simple, just repeat the lines as on the screen below, drawing the lines from top to bottom, slightly curved, while they should be directed inward, to the center of the face, never outward, except for those that are under the lower lip, the opposite , go from the inside to the outside.

As in the previous step, this step is also very simple. Also just repeat the lines as in the screenshots below, try to draw them more randomly, not always parallel, try to make them smoother, so that they look natural.

STEP eleven

Eyebrows, approximately, the same. The direction of the scalp is always the same, so it’s easier to draw, but drawing an eyebrow is always a complicated action, so that the eyebrow looks natural, regardless of whether you want a beautiful or ugly eyebrow, as in this case. Start drawing from the center of the face, hair by hair. You apply hairs from top to bottom and always keep in mind that hairs will be located differently on the segments where you recreate the eyebrow.

The hairs, most concentrated in the center, usually differ from the rest (those located at the edges of the eyebrow). Further, several hairs are located approximately in a straight line from top to bottom, then they seem to be bent from above / from the extreme side towards the bottom / toward the center. When creating an eyebrow, use a brush “1” size 1 or 2, the size of the brush at your discretion, the color is black to create a contrast between the white gray hair on the head and black eyebrows.

The result should be as in the screenshot below.

Hair

It’s time to draw long hair. Half of the process is performed by single strokes of the brush, smoothly directed from top to bottom.

But before that, we will quickly create a “base for hair”, for this we will create a brush for applying hair. So let’s create a new document, let’s go File – New (File> New (Ctrl + N).

In option Set (Preset), do not pay attention to the parameters, they do not play a huge role in this step.

So, the document is ready to go.

Select tool again Pencil (pencil tool), make sure that the foreground color is BLACK (this is very important if we need a brush with high opacity).

The settings for the pencil must be a round hard brush so that the speaker is turned off, see the screenshot below.

Draw 5 separate black dots as shown in the screenshot below.

Create a rectangular selection around the points, as shown in the screenshot below.

Next, go to the menu Edit (EDIT) and select the option To determine brush(DEFINE BRUSH PRESET).

Name the brush “hair brush” and then click OK.

A new brush will appear among the remaining brushes, select a new brush and try to apply it. The result should be as in the screenshot below.

Go to the bookmark Brush (Brush (f5) and activate the option Other dynamics (TRANSFER), set in line Control (control) Pen pressure (PEN PRESSURE) in option Opacity swings (opacity jitter)

Then go to the option Brush prints (BRUSH TIP SHAPE) and decrease the value Interval (spacing) up to 1% and set the angle of rotation to 90º top left (you can see the settings in the screenshot below).

Activate the option Form Dynamics (SHAPE DYNAMICS). In option Size fluctuation (SIZE JITTER) in a row Control (control) set Pen pressure (PEN PRESSURE), and in option Angle swings (ANGLE JITTER) in a row Control (control) set Direction (DIRECTION).

In option Brush sets (BRUSH PRESETS), save the brush later by pressing the button Create a new brush (CREATE NEW BRUSH) in the bottom panel, give the name of the brush (I called the brush number 3 among the brushes in the set) and click OK.

The strokes applied by the new brush should look like in the screenshot below, on the right side of the image.

As in the previous steps, using the tool Pipette (eyedropper tool), select a sample of light-colored skin and use a new brush, while in the toolbar select the tool Brush (BRUSH TOOL). (very important, do not use a pencil, since the lines should be smooth and the only way is to use a brush) draw some random strokes, as shown in the screenshot below over the black area that we left blank, taking into account hair creation.

Try to approximately repeat the movement of the wavy lines when you draw the hair.

Next, we will draw several separate hair fragments to make the hair look more loose and natural; for this, we will change the parameters of our first brush. Select brush “1” and in the tab Brushes (BRUSH (f5), activate the option Form Dynamics (SHAPE DYNAMICS) In options Size fluctuation (SIZE JITTER) in a row Control (control) set Pen pressure (PEN PRESSURE).

Repeat the previous steps when we recreated the wavy hair lines, randomly draw individual hair fragments, try to keep them as long as possible.

So, using the same brush, draw short “crazy” hair, the hair should be short and curly, resembling the red arrows in the screenshot below, but use a hard brush, because this hair is not soft.

The result should be as in the screenshot below.

STEP 13

Choose a tool Frame(crop tool) and using this tool, crop the image as shown in the screenshot below, increase the size of the canvas.
