The Five Nights at Freddy’s series of games has become an Internet hit. A simple game with creepy, but believable characters and an unforgettable story won the hearts of many players. With the release of the fourth part and the film, on which a large studio is working, the wave of popularity will not soon subside.
In this lesson, we’ll draw my favorite team member, Foxy. Have you ever wondered what this character would look like in a more realistic performance? Let’s try to find out! By the way, in the lesson you will learn how to draw from scratch, step by step. We will work only with two brushes and several textures. Let’s start with the idea.
This is a very important part. Even if you know exactly what you want to draw, you will never say with certainty whether this is the best thing you can draw. Why not find out right now, you still have nothing to lose?
Create a new file, turn on the appropriate music and casually draw the character’s figure. Use a texture brush. For example, I used a brush, the creation of which is demonstrated in this lesson. Do not zoom the document, draw at a distance and do not even think about scaling. Several lines are there, several lines are here, and immediately proceed to the next draft.
Install Opacity (opacity) by 20% and create a new layer. We are a little closer to the document, reduce the size of the brush and try to see something in our sketches. For now, forget about the details, it is now important to determine the basic form.
Choose your favorite sketch. If nothing is suitable, repeat steps 1 and 2. It does not take much time, so do not worry about it.
Selecting a pose, select it with Lasso Tool (L) (Lasso), copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) to the new document. The document should be as large as possible (I prefer to use 4000 x 4000 pixels, but any size larger than 2000 will also work).
Decrease Opacity (opacity) sketch and create a new layer.
If necessary, draw a perspective grid. A few simple lines will suffice. All you need is to understand what the sex will look like in a distortion.
Create a new layer and draw a more detailed sketch of the character.
Now it looks like an ordinary fox, so let’s add the features inherent in Foxy, for example, a slightly shifted jaw and a torn skin. Eraser (Еraser) remove unnecessary parts and draw new ones.
Notice that the sketch is still rough, with no details and neat lines. In digital painting, a perfect linear drawing is not always needed, because many details are added at the stage of working with color. Do not try to predict all the details at the sketch stage.
2. Create a drawing base.
Remove all the extra layers, leaving only the sketch. Create a new layer and use a rigid brush to paint the body of Foxy (I used the Ink brush from my set). Make sure that there are no gaps between the lines.
Using tool Magic Wand Tool (W) (Magic Wand) select the area after the stroke and invert the selection with Ctrl + Shift + I. Create a new layer and fill the selection with color using the tool Paint Bucket Tool (G) (Fill). Now you can remove the stroke from the previous step.
Layout layer is placed above the fill. Click on it with the right mouse button and select Create Clipping Mask (Create clipping mask). Any layer that we place above the fill and transform into a clipping mask will be visible only within the fill.
Create a new layer between the mask and fill. It will automatically become a clipping mask, if not, do it manually. Fill the layer with a dark color. But note that the color should be light enough for us to see the sketch. In my case, I used dark blue.
Below the fill, create a new layer and fill it with the same color.
Create a new layer above the previous ones (do not forget to transform it into a clipping mask). At this stage, we should get rid of the sketch, but at the same time, save some details. White paint the body, leaving small gaps with the lower contour. Do not try hard and for now do not think about the right lighting. This is still a sketch!
Under the previous layer, create a new one and fill it with black. Then merge both layers together (Ctrl + E). Remove the old layer with a contour that is between the clipping mask and the merged layer. Change its blend mode to Multiply (Multiplication) and get a ready-made base for applying color.
3. Add color and textures.
Create a new layer between the last two. Now we can freely apply the base color. It should be neutral in brightness, rather dark than light.
Paste the fabric texture. Move on Filter – Liquify (Filter – Plastic) and with the available filter tools we modify the shape of the texture, trying to give it a more volumetric appearance. Then we remove the extra part of the texture that goes beyond the pants.
You can play with the opacity of the texture so that it fits better with the picture. A layer mask is also perfect for this.
Insert the rust texture and adjust its size so that it covers the metal parts of the character. Activate the free transformation (Ctrl + T), right-click on the document and select Warp (Deformation). Adjust the shape of the texture so that it repeats the curves of the limbs as accurately as possible.
Then, using the layer mask, remove the excess.
Using the same method, add rust to the rest of the body.
The time has come for the most important part of the lesson. Adding realistic lighting, we will create the illusion of reality of what is happening. Lines and colors are just symbols, but illumination speaks directly to our brain.
Create a new layer above the background. With rough strokes without the use of complex shapes, draw a background. I decided to place Foxy in a small dark room in which he caught someone. Light comes from an open door, and for a more dramatic effect, the head will be in the shade.
Add more details. I drew a night guard who was standing in the doorway and was watching what was going on. Then I remembered where Foxy usually hides, and decided to paint a curtain instead of a door. Now what is happening takes on some meaning, but the viewer will have to speculate about what really happened there.
Let’s apply the shadow according to the light source. Open up Window – Adjustments (Window – Correction) and apply Hue/ Saturation (Hue / Saturation). Activate the parameter Colorize (Toning) and set the color to dark blue.
Slightly reduce Opacity (opacity), so that the original color is visible in the shaded areas.
The adjustment layer has a mask that we will edit. Black brush remove excess, and white – restore.
Create a new layer above the corrective. Activate Eyedropper Tool (I) (Pipette) to sample color on the lighted area of wool. Increase the brightness of the color and draw a brush on the most lighted areas to add glare.
Create a new layer above the clipping layers. Reduce the size of the brush and draw small details with the same color of the wool.
Again, increase the brightness of the color and add a little blue to it to make the color colder. We draw small details. Do not touch the shaded area and white areas.
Also detail the pants. Here you should not use bright colors, as the pants are not glossy and reflect light poorly.
Shading metallic areas. Work carefully and use different shades for rusty and rust-intact areas.
5. Finish drawing
Perhaps this is the most difficult part of the lesson. Even despite the fact that the drawing is almost complete, the gap between “almost” and “completed” may be longer than all the previous steps, depending on how refined you want to see the picture.
Let’s start by drawing a glowing eye. Create a new layer. I used a standard soft round brush, but a hard brush would work too. I also drew a drop of blood on my teeth. Note that they are not red, but rather dark purple.
Light falls on the floor and the wall and reflects on the body of Foxy. We can use this to add highlights to the shaded parts of the character.
To begin with, use an unsaturated light blue color to draw the outline on the metal parts of the body, but only in the shaded areas.
Make sure that the glare is not too blurry; if necessary, use the eraser (E) to make the edges of the glare rougher.
Pale red color draw the reflected light on the hair of the head and tail. Due to this, these sites will be better visible. Do the same with your pants.
Now let’s circle the light color of the poor torn guy on the floor.
Not only the floor reflects light on the surrounding objects. Each object reflects a certain amount of light. We use this feature so that all elements in the figure do not contradict each other and look harmonious.
Insert the texture of wall 1 and set its blend mode to Overlay (Overlap). Place it on the wall of the picture.
Insert the wall texture 2, change the blending mode to Overlay (Overlap). Activate the free transformation (Ctrl + T), hold down the Ctrl key and drag the nodes to deform the texture in perspective and get the effect as shown below.
Pause, drink a cup of aromatic coffee, then look at the drawing again to identify errors. You should catch all the small moments that you think look wrong.
Good job! Now you know how to draw a detailed drawing from scratch. Why don’t you, using this technique, draw all the characters of the game? I would love to look at your work!
